Anyone here a fan of Dame Edna Everidge?

Barry Humphries, Australian comedian and creator of Dame Edna Everage, dies aged 89

"...In a seven-decade career spanning theatre, television, books and film, Humphries was famed for his absurdist, discomfiting and transgressive humour, poking fun at Australian culture with his cast of personas, some of which would rank among the best-loved comedic creations of all time: Dame Edna Everage, the gaudy, waspish housewife from Moonee Ponds; Sir Les Patterson, the vulgar and boozy Australian cultural attaché; the fundamentally decent and senile Sandy Stone; and archetypal Aussie bloke Barry McKenzie..."

...In 1955, while on a tour bus driving around rural Victoria in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of Twelfth Night, he began to develop a character that would dominate his whole career: Edna Everage. With her lavender bouffant and winged glasses, the sharp-tongued housewife was a parody of the priggish streak Humphries saw in his parents’ generation... In 1959 he moved to London, where he befriended British comedians and satirists including Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, Alan Bennett and Spike Milligan, all of whom he would work with repeatedly..."

He did a wonderful Aussie version of Max Ehrmann's well-known "Desiderata":

Meeting the Queen in 1977. Looks like we were amused :)

The first time I heard "Dame Edna" I found it one of the dumbest I ever saw on TV! TV has gotten a lot worse, but I could find time to waste on this drivel. Sorry the old guy kicked the bucket, but we all go sometime.

Well, he was something of a acquired taste, perhaps for those of us who are not from Oz. :)

I found the Dame Edna thing was something to be taken in small doses. That said, Barry did come out with some classic stuff, none of which I am about to link as I'm not ready to be banned just yet.

I always wondered who supplied all the gladioli tossed out at the end of the show.

RIP, Sir.

I was not familiar with Barry Humphries/Dame Edna until seeing this thread and then reading his/her obit. Interesting character and a remarkably successful, long career.

Rest in peace.

Definitely a "his" obit; he was fully hetero, despite the success of Dame Edna Everidge. ("Everidge" being the Aussie pronounciation of "average".)

Yup. He was pretty intense and certainly could be outrageous

Surprisingly, my cat took an interest in the various articles I was reading this morning:

I had never heard of him/her, but some of the photos sure bring back memories of Mrs. Doubtfire. The good old days of being able to laugh about innocent poking fun of someone or something are pretty much gone it sounds like.
