I've been looking at an AMT AutoMag II .22 Magnum that a friend has for sale. 6 inch, 95%, no box or docs & low round count. I have no knowledge of this weapon and sure would appreciate any and all opinions/experience. Thanks in advance.

I had a buddy after one years ago. When he finally got it....didn't work very well. Never did get it fixed right.

Don't have any other experience. My buddy was really disappointed and sold at a loss.

I rather liked their looks.

I had their 10/22 clone, and a couple of other AMT products that worked very well. 20 years ago though.

I collect AMT's and have a few Automag 2's.

As long as I feed mine Winchester Super X ammo, they cycle fine. If your buying a used gun, don't be suprised if you have to replace a few springs, Brownells has them.

The reason for the low round count is usually the fact they won't feed from the magazine. Almost all shooters who buy them gave up in disgust. A suggestion, if you know the seller, is to ask him to shoot it or allow you to. Watch closely to see how many failures you get per magazine. Then ask yourself if you're happy with a gun that works that way.

Most people who own them have a huge array of 22 mag ammo on hand. One box of dozens of different bullets and makers. Almost all have about one magazine out of the box. They weren't testing for accuracy, they were seeking just one brand/style that would work in the gun.

I had one for years. Always wanted a 22 mag semi auto. As mentioned before, it's picky on ammo. It seemed to preferr Winchester.

A friend wanted it. I sold it to him for $300. He has been happy with it.

I have two. Like most other autos, it is picky about ammo reliability. It also refuses to work with cheapo or damaged magazines. The chamber must be kept clean.

Both of mine are great shooters, reliable and accurate for a rimfire handgun. Pretty much on-par with a Buckmark or Ruger, but with the power of a rimfire rifle in a 6" SS handgun.

I like 'em, but understand every gun that left the factory was not equal quality. so I don't regard them as a good choice for a beginner or someone who is not handy with a deburr kit, as tey do have some sharp edges.

I think they are a great design that would do well with some modernizing.

What WBW2 said! I have a 6 inch model and it will shoot Super X all day long as well as CCI Maxi Mag+V in the factory mags.

I have an aftermarket magazine from CDNN and it will feed JHP fine but not FMJ? Sent it back twice and finally gave up as they knew the problem and at that time had both the black followers (factory and the red/orange ones (aftermarket or late production not sure which)Picture on the website had the correct black follower but they didn't seem to care as last time I got the same mag I sent to then back (made a small mark as I thought I was getting dicked around), that cost them my business of many years. Have no idea how many guns and parts I have bought from them.

Also if I remember correctly, when the Automag II came out Win Super X was the only 22 mag ammo hot enough to function the gun, as time went on CCI and others got with the program. BUT right now like all calibers .22 Mag Super X is hard to find.

Mine shoots very well with the Remington ballistic tip.(I forget the name) and also the super x. Tried some Win Dynapoint and it would not function with any of the 3 mags.
Kind of a cool pistol but mine is a safe queen.

Many thanks for all the replies. Shot the gun yesterday and, just as everyone said, it worked well with the Super X. Other brands of ammo didn't work as well. 2 & 3 out of a 9 round magazine were FTF. A friend I shoot with has one and he also said that cutting a section off the recoil spring would solve the problem. I really like the looks of the gun, the way it handles and fires. When it fires. Still undecided on the purchase. Again, many thanks.

Had an FFL for years and had about a dozen customers over time who just "had to have" one of the AMT offerings, and as such, I had the chance to deal with their "service department".

My take on the process - the first time it went back to AMT it got the 'sunlight' treatment; they put the box on a window sill and hoped exposure to the sunlight over a two to three month period would cure what was ailing it. The second trip back sometimes exhibited evidence of at least an attempt to repair something, and by that time the guns were usually sold or taded away at a gunshow by the owner before AMT ever got a chance to see it a third time . . .

I've shot quite a few, wouldn't buy one myself - saw a few that worked and a lot that didn't from the 22 mags to the 380's to the 30 carbine pistols to the 45 autos. Interesting concepts but never quite lived up to what they were supposed to be.

For what it's worth. You asked for experience and opinions.
