Default MLK Day 2024

Today was my 5th annual MLK Day Celebration! We traveled the 40 miles for a fried baloney sandwich at G&R Tavern in Waldo, Ohio. The Cream pies are back and I had Half chocolate and half peanut butter! Sides of Onion Rings and fried Mushrooms were typically large.

One of the special things about MLK Day for me was, MLK Day 2012 was the first time I went shooting after my stroke. There were about 10 of the regular guys that went to Raynor's Range south of Zanesville, Ohio. The guys were allowing me to regain my strength and confidence, by staying on the shorter ranges, from 204 yards to 600 yards.

I was laying prone at 500 yards shooting my Savage 110 BA in 338 Lapua Mag. With 300 grain SMK's at 2900 fps. The first target I engaged was a 8"x 8" steel plate. One shot, and DING (dead center). The second shot I took was a 6" Circle One shot and Ding (dead center). I yelled to the guys, that I was going for the "cigarette pack", a 2"x3" steel plate. One shot and thud. I looked to my spotter and ask, "What happened?" he was laying next to me looking through his scope and SHAKING! I repeated, "What happened?" He just kept laughing and pointed down range! I looked through the scope and couldn't find the target. As I looked around, the left most target (with the "Cigarette Pack" on it) was pulled from the ground and "tossed" up the hill about 15 yards! The concrete was still around the pole's base.

I knew my recovery from the stroke was getting close to complete! Yes, MLK Day is the day I like to celebrate my return to the land of the "Able" from the land of the Disabled!

I hope you have a pleasant day and good times with your day off!

Ivan
