Default USPS rant

I don’t know if we’ve had one for a while. I sent a uspmo to a guy in Texas and made the mistake of sending it regular mail, my mistake, but I wasn’t in any hurry, I figured it would be there by the end of the week. It took an entire 7 day week. We joked about the sick three legged mule that delivered it, but then he sent my FAL forend last Wendsday, I’m guessing three day, and it was supposed to be at my place in Pittsburgh on Saturday. I checked tracking on Saturday morning and it is in Philadelphia, ***. Well I guess thanks to Presidents’ Day , it might be here Tuesday. I was in no hurry for the part, but sometimes you really have to wonder.

Never, ever send a USPS Postal Money Order any way but priority mail.

It's the only easy way to get reimbursed if the letter gets lost.

Ask me how I know.

I find that when I ship things it gets to its destination quickly, when I’m waiting for a check to arrive it takes forever.

It is what it is. Sometimes It works great and sometimes not. When I see that something I ordered is sent my US mail I just cross my fingers and wait to see what kind of entertainment I will get by watching the tracking. It is not going to change. It is just the sign of the times we live in and at my age just one the thing I live with.

Oh the irony . . . . So sad that we can't trust the US Post Office to deliver a US Postal Money Order. (But I get it.)

Sent my sister on the east coast a normal Christmas card 2 weeks before Christmas from Montana...she's till waiting for it on February 18th.
As far as money orders thru the mail, only " certified mail " with tracking and must be signed for, NEVER standard mail !

Considering the volume of mail that the USPS carries, the error rate is probably staggeringly low. We have had a few problems, but the biggest issue seems to be with the closing of some regional processing centers. When the I90 Vantage project kicks off later in the spring, it's going make a mess.

Our local PO is pretty good about stuff. They have a large fleet of rented vehicles and are out delivering 7 days a week and often darned late just to get the mission done. The backroom folks will come out when it is busy and ask us if we are getting a package (they can't do the counter work, but help when they are able).

I recently had a package sit for 5 days at the PO before it actually got scanned in. When I checked tracking they made it sound like they just got it. They knew it was there. They gave me my tracking number and then they just never scanned it in for 5 days.

To truly appreciate the USPS and it’s flaws, you need to live and or work in other countries. Overseas I only use FedEx, DHL or similar.

I made a purchase recently from a fellow forum member on the west coast. I sent payment and it took 6 days from western NY. He sent me merchandise and it took 48 hrs……… I guess the jet stream carries things faster west to east. Good tail wind.

Granted, the USPS doesn't mess up often. But when they do, they go all out.
I bought an item from a member here not too long ago. He mailed it Dec 1. After multiple trips to seven different cities and tracking showing it in Atlanta, it miraculously appeared in my mail box on Jan 2. 32 days after it was mailed. To this day, tracking shows it "In Transit".

BTW: the lost mail form you can fill out on the USPS website doesn't work either and local *** can't help at all.

The really bad part about the PO is there really is NO real tracking service with lost priority even 90 % of the time..and if something is truly lost insurance is useless. I had a package that weighed 29 pounds when sent in a large priority mail box. It got to 3 hours from me when it disappeared. I eventually got "a" package in a brown box with the original address part of the original white PM box taped on. It weighed 16 pounds. I filed an insurance claim which was denied because I "got" the package. 5 new Lyman 2 cavity bullet molds 246 pieces of new 45 Scofield brass and a set of RCBS carbide Cowboy dies went missing at the Casper PO...that is where the whole thing got "reboxed"

Wow, that sounds like flat out robbery. I’m guessing your box exploded on a conveyor belt somewhere and that’s all that came out the other end. I once saw this at an airport baggage claim with a poorly packed and secured toolbox.

I recently sent a high value rifle across the county for some updating. Of course I sent it USPS next day. I've done it a few times and don't have any real complaints. This time I figured I'd experiment and I got an Apple Air Tag that I put in the box with the gun. I was able to watch the package, real time, go from my local post office right to the door of the place I was shipping it to. The only time I could not track it was when it was actually on a plane and airborne. I think I paid about 30 bucks for it but it was well worth it. The place I sent it to put the tag in an envelope and I watched it make it's way across the country back to me. The only thing about it was it opened my eyes to how easy it would be for someone to track you.

Considering that the great majority of the mail that fills our mailbox is junk/scam mail.

I had a Colt SAA repaired by a 'smith in Wyoming, and he sent it to my dealer. The PO sent it to a local PO and let me know, not the dealer, that I could pick it up there. I went to the PO, picked up the gun, and then let my dealer know I had it and would bring it to him so he could get it on his books, as he originally sent the gun to the 'smith.

I know stuff happens but the box with the molds etc was securely taped with strap type tape. But the bag of brass may have broken so sounds of brass in a box. I once had a revolver repaired by a smith in Tx. He sent the gun directly back to me USPS..Other than the twit part timer at the PO calling the police about the gun it all went ok. But that was some years ago...I am not very trusting about the PO now. I have to send my K-80 BBL to Briley to have one of the tube chambers replaced. I am going to send it UPS and it doesn't need to go through an FFL but it's a 3-4 thousand dollar item.. I am also going to sell one of my Spolar Shotshell reloaders(the one I don't ue) and guess I will use UPS...but I'm not very trusting of them either...on expensive merchandise..but it ill be a BIG box

When having trouble with a trespasser a set up an easy to see broken trailcam with TAG in it, knowing he would steal camera thinking his pic was taken. Game Warden told me it happens all the time.

I send checks and money orders via first class all the time. Nary a problem.

I did have that magazine disappear recently. The PO says nothing was stolen because they delivered the package and they have no record of the package having been opened. Also said that an insurance claim would likely be denied because they had no record of the package being damaged.

The problems that I now have with the PO is they seem to have taken common sense out of the equation.

Back in the 80s a friend of my brother sent him a letter from Denmark addressed to my brother, with the town name, no street address, and USA. It got to him.

About 20 years later when I lived in Maryland, my wife sent a letter to the Boy Scout offices in Bethesda. They have a four story building that takes up a good chunk of the block. Having a brain fart, she addressed it to Boy Scouts of America, Bethesda MD omitting the street address. It was returned. They couldn't make the leap to say, "Hey, this goes with all the other mail that goes to that building."

Twice recently I sent paperwork UPS next day. Still looking for it, still under 'investigation'. Re-did the paperwork and sent it USPS priority and Walla, it got there.

I live in the U.P. of Michigan. I have a sistor who live 165 miles from me in
SSM, Michigan. It takes a letter 5 to 7 days to get to her. The letter travels over 1000 miles to get to her. Just my 2cents worth....OldYooper.

I usually have good luck with the post office. I sent a barrel off to Warsaw IL to be cut and re threaded, that's currently moving around in FL. I was supposed to received it on the March 4th...who knows.

This is the tracking of a package a friend of my mom's sent to my house for some reason for her. I've never seen anything like it. It's been moving back and forth to the same location. It may be next month before I get that barrel.

Click it and it will enlarge.

Sent our 40 yr old nephew a birthday card 5 days before his BD. He’s lived at the same address for the last 17 years. He didn’t get it. A week later he Still didn’t have it. Two weeks after That what shows upon MY mailbox but Dave’s birthday card returned because the USPS was “unable to locate address”. That message was from the PO in HIS town of 4 k folks!!! Put it in a Manila envelope, remained itto the SAME address and he got it three days later. That friends, is a seriously screwed up organization…

Last year my sister was going to school in the UK. I sent her a birthday card, it arrived in 7 days. Across 2 different mail systems and an ocean.

I ship any firearm buy USPS Registered Mail. My last two shipments (from WI) have been "lost" during their transit. One package going to VA was "lost" in a Washington DC PO for over a week. Tracking says it arrived in DC and there the package sat. I filed a claim and then all of a sudden the package arrived at it destination. The last one I shipped was going to MA and got as far as Jamacia, NY. Tracking shows it arrival and there it sat for two weeks! After filing a claim, it arrived at the recipients door. Why do Registered Mail packages get put in the safe and them forgotten?

I contacted FedEx and asked why it sat for three days and the only answer I got was "we don't guarantee a delivery date for FedEx ground." I replied, "I don't care about the delivery date, I want to know why it sat for three days at the store." Same response.

I once ordered a gun part from a guy in Florida. He mailed it right away, but it took almost two weeks to arrive at my place in PA. When I checked the tracking history, it showed it had crossed the Pennsylvania/Maryland border SEVEN times!

If the automated sorting equipment missorts something, it will get caught at the second location. If not handled properly, the missort will happen again and the process will repeat.

When I lived in Maryland, I got a hand addressed letter on which the MD looked more like MO. Interestingly, each place it landed postmarked it. It bounced around a few places in Missouri, came to Maryland, went back to the Show Me state, and finally made it to me. I wish that I had kept the envelope.

I imagine that somewhere there is a package like the guy stuck on the MTA, forever doomed to go from post office to post office, never to reach its destination.

Due to my barrel leaving Florida and heading back to IL. I Googled how to talk to a real human at the post office. I was on hold for 42 minutes, but determined to talk to a human.

She said the shipper had shipped it to himself. When I asked her why it would leave IL. then go to Miami, and Jax FL. she said "all I can tell you is what I see scanned."

Talked to the shipper, and he said the label must have got messed up. He said he'll be watching for it. I've had packages get stuck in one location a few days, but this is a first for me.

Complete rebuild. They are not doing it the smart way (tear down completely and replace, which could be done in a year), but in steps estimated to take 3 years. It's old bridge and needs a lot of work.
The detours are vile as there are only a few places to cross the River. (Generally, south to the tri-cities and back using 395 and I 82, or north using Blewett, which will suck in the winter.) The publicity has been worse. I only know of it cuz some stuff came up at work. It is estimated that going over the bridge will take longer than going around.

Tens of thousands in metro Atlanta have packages and mail that is taking weeks to be delivered. Apparently the Post Office opened a new distribution center and something is seriously wrong. On the local news tonight they showed an ariel view of 30+ tractor trailers parked and waiting to get processed. I have a revolver that was shipped Priority Mail from
Florida almost 2 weeks ago that has said "in route to next facility" for days. I'm beginning to think it may not ever get delivered to my local FFL. At least the dealer who shipped it fully insured it.

The post office is first and foremost a government employment program. Any mail or packages delivered are fortunate by products.

Can attest to the problem. Sent 5 certified mail letters with checks in each from an ATL suburb for delivery in Eastern FL. Took 10 days of "en route to next facility" before delivery. Dave_n

After being 11 days late I got it on the 15th.

The box, address, and barcode were perfect.

I just received a W-2 that was mailed 6 weeks earlier. I also just got a political flyer for a candidate for an election that was held 2 weeks ago.
