"Fast food" is getting to be quite interesting. I do not carry a cell phone and refuse to use kiosks!

Lots of places have unique local Burgers and around here it’s the Laguna Burger.
It originated in a Gas Station - Convenience Store on the Laguna Reservation which is West of town on I-40.
Now they several locations.
I usually have the Wimp. 1/3 pounder loaded, $9.

Chick Fil A does amazingly well locally, normally a constant line of cars waiting at the drive-through. I have been inside a few times, but I am not a chicken lover. I don't remember the details, but the way CFA does their franchising is considerably different from how the other FF chains do it.

Haven't been to a Chick Fil'A yet. They opened a couple in the Vegas area. We do hit the Houston Hot Chicken up the street about once a month in our Friday night treat rotation.

Wife and I went to 5 Guys for lunch today while on a shopping expedition to the big city, haven't been there in a year or so. I had a regular double, she had a single "Little burger", shared a small fry, and 2 small drinks.
$33.93. WOW!!! They are great burgers and their fries are excellent but I don't care how many of their free peanuts you eat they ain't THAT good.

Default Roughly…

Low down payment required. No equity built over time. Really title is Operator. Usually 1-2 locations. A very few have 3 units. Never heard of a CFA operator having more but I could be out of date.
Income per unit is high based on revenues and profit. Operator is required to be hands on. Selection process difficult.

Some years back we were acquaintances with a married couple who were interested in taking on a CFA franchise for an area north of San Antonio. After looking into it they decided to take another career path (both were recent USAF retirees). They decided there would be no time to lead a normal family life if they went the CFA route. They told us the story, but as I said, I don't remember the details, other than it was not a deal I would entertain doing.

I haven't been to Wendy's in over a decade because of some lousy customer service. I complained to the manager and she didn't care. I contacted the corporate customer care people and they didn't care either. Maybe I'll go back and help them lose money.

The closest Wendy's to our home has been closed and empty for over four years. Easy to pinpoint the reason, at least for dine-in. All they played was horrible rap-type ghetto music. After they began that, I did not go back again. Evidently I was not the only one. Gotta wonder whose bright idea that was.

Well in my experiences in some fast food places it seems like whatever music they play its always to dam loud.

We went in a Jerseys Mikes in northern NY a couple times and always found what I said above. Solution we went no more. Been to a couple other of that company and they did not have that problem.

Right. I don’t go to cheap “restaurants” to listen to music! Please turn that danged stuff down! If the staff has it turned up for their amusement, the manager should take care of that problem. Oh! Wait! I forgot. There usually doesn’t appear to be a manager keeping an eye on things.

Default MUSIC TOO LOUD - Use the Comment Cards

Many years ago we were at a Wendy's and the background music was ANNOYING LOUD.
Complained - blank look nothing happened.
Waited a few minutes - told clerk It is still too LOUD. Where ar the comment cards.
Got our comment card and mentioned the comment cards to other diners.
Several others were seen picking up comment cards.

Music suddenly turned down. Staff member came to table and lied to us.
"Some songs are louder than others."
WRONG - BIG MISTAKE
I pointed to the logo on my windbreaker.
"Sound and Video Contractor Magazine".
as an indication of a professional qualification.
Pointed out that background music providers are very careful to keep their level the same.
Background music and sound system is to obscure conversations at adjacent table and kitchen noised..
It is not intended to be Disco style entertainment for the kitchen staff.

Comment cards sent - Corporate reply was that Sound Level was under control of Franchise and not corporate control.

Anyone who has taken ECON 101 knows that when manpower costs go up and productivity doesn't increase, what the consumer pays will go up as well.

When I was in the fast food phase of my life, the store manager always said that manpower was the biggest expense, even greater than cost of food.

There's a Cane's Chicken near me and the music in there makes it hard to communicate with the staff. I almost never use drive-thrus.

And it's not just the base rate hourly amount. On top of that is the employer contribution to social security and fringe benefits, if any, tied to the hourly pay. I don't know if FF places provide any employee fringe benefits or not. You could easily add maybe 15% additional to the $20/hour.

There was a report that McDonalds was ordering franchises throughout the country to raise prices to pay for the CA minimum wage. I'm a bit skeptical because that came from a manager in a different state and franchisees can likely set their own prices based on local economies.

What a $20.00/hour minimum wage will do is push companies to automation to the extent possible. The last McDonalds I was in was in SC and had four automated kiosks to order on. That's the start, not the end.

They'll automate cooking as much as possible and maybe even go to an automat style delivery.

Robots don't call in sick, don't need breaks, don't steal food to give to their buddies, don't spit on food, and don't argue with customers. Oh, they don't need vacations either.

I have read that McD has been developing and prototyping automated food prep systems to replace human workers for years, but mainly in Australia, not in the USA. I think McD has used ordering kiosks for a long time but maybe not everywhere. I know the McD closest to me had them pre-pandemic. Jack-in -the -Box installed ordering kiosks at least 7 or 8 years ago, and no one used them.So they were removed. As I remember they were somewhat complicated and user-hostile, especially when customizing orders (hold the pickles and mustard, etc.). And that was why no one wanted to use them. I very seldom go to McD and have never attempted to use their kiosks.

I suspect applying AI and robotics to FF chains will become a very big deal, especially if labor costs continue to escalate dramatically.

I like going to the local taco truck. The food is good, has nothing to do with the gal in her low-cut tee shirt bending over to get my money.

There are only a couple of Chick-Fil-A locations in Spokane (so far) and neither of them are close to our house.
We just happened to be close to one of them around lunch time today. So we decided to go there for a treat.
We ordered enough food for 3 people.
Me - 4 piece chicken tenders meal (including fries and a drink)
My wife - 3 piece chicken tenders
Our friend - Grilled chicken sandwich meal (including fries and a drink).
The total for our order came to just over 33 bucks.
So an average of around 11 bucks each for 3 adults.
As to whether or not it was worth it? The chicken tenders were probably the BEST that I've had anywhere in my recent memory, and they gave us 5 different dipping sauces to go with them.
Bottom line: I'll go back to Chick-Fil-A again when I am craving some GOOD chicken tenders...

I like chicken. Unless it's overcooked, I'll eat it - I'll enjoy it! That being said, I've tried Chick-fil-a, and I don't think it's better than anybody else. It's OK, - I don't think it's worth the higher prices - but that's just me!

A few Chick-Fil-A's in my area, first was in the local mall food court, many years ago. They are ok, but nothing special. All have remained open, but I don't visit any of them. For the cost of one meal, I can buy frozen chicken and make 5-6 meals from it with buns, air fryer fries, and dressings, lettuce and cheese.

If you opt in, McD's has excellent heath care options. I had it for a while during my fast food phase. Reasonable premium and low co-pays.

When my daughter was an undergrad, she worked for Chipotle. They gave her a couple grand a year for getting good grades.

I think they have opened a chick fil a in Billings. I used to really like KFC...but since the Colonel is gone the quality has gone to the dumpster. I also liked the other fried chicken place....Popeyes. They had good fried chicken but I liked their sides. Esp Red Beans and rice...but their quality seems to be going to the dumper too. We have been going to a place called Pizza Ranch and they have pretty good fried chicken...pizza is normal... almost edible...but they have a salad bar and mashed taters veggies and some decent soup. All you can (or should) eat. for 8 bucks for us older...vintage folks from 2-4. I go to Wendy's occasionally.
