We had one here in the PNW 2017. Didn't seem to be so much hipe. It was cool to see, my cat Hanna did react to it, Punkin cared less. And, spoiler alert, the world didn't end.

I've recently met Dr. Sky, of note on the radio, on Coast-to-Coast.
He told me he will be traveling to some small town in Texas that will be overwhelmed with people.

The last total eclipse for VT was 8/31/32. They only happen at any given location every 100 +- years, so yea...I'm looking forward to the spectacle. Extended weather report for here is clear and sunny.

Like other western New Yorkers here , I’m in the path of totality. I honestly could not care less. The back of my house faces south. I can sit and watch it perfectly but probably won’t remember.

Cloudy day
Forecast for Central Texas is cloud cover for the first 2/3 of the day on Monday April 8th. We're virtually dead center in totality and have to admit I was looking forward to it as we don't have to go anywhere to see it - except outside.
The irony is that we have so few cloudy days here, regardless of the season, that it "just figures." Maybe we'll catch a break at the right time - I hope so.

The Noon News had a story about local hotels cancelling ALL old reservations, and rebooking at up to 5X the price. One particular Travel Agency had 88 rooms booked since 2020. Now his tour had to find other farther away hotels and they were out thousands of dollars.
Now there's a job for Leticia James. Those hotels should pay huge fines.

Now that is ironic...and unfortunate. I think we'll luck out, our average April weather is a 60% chance of being cloudy, but our forecast is sunny and clear...hope it doesn't change.

In the NYT today (free link)
Eclipse’s Path Is Also Leaving a Trail of High Hotel Prices ...One Super 8 in Illinois advertised $949 a night. Its normal rate is $95.
More expensive hotels in large cities are also seeing a spike. The Ritz-Carlton in Dallas is currently listing a two-night stay at $7,600 for Sunday-Tuesday. One week later, the price for a two-night stay will be $1,329... This could be a way to finally afford that Registered Magnum you've always wanted, if you're in the right place and have a spare room to rent

I'm glad I live on the other side of the continent and won't have Porta-Potties lining the road and dozens of gawkers camped out in my field gazing skywards. I'll be able to enjoy the event and its consequences from the comfort of my laptop. My next-door-neighbour (originally from VT) has two sisters in Maine & NY so I guess they'll get the full brunt of Eclipsomania.
I wonder if there will be a limited-edition "Eclipse" reissue of Dark Side of the Moon?

I tried and failed to buy eclipse glasses today. Went to three places that were reputed to have them and nada. Ace Hardware said they ordered 90 pairs and received eight. All gone in the city. I guess I'll just have to use my binoculars without a filter. I'll be in my room if you need anything.

Totality is expected to last for a little over four minutes. Indianapolis businesses have special food and drinks for the expected 100 thousand visitors to the down town viewing sites. Unbelievable! Expensive hotel and parking space prices.

We live in NW Hamilton. It will be visible here beginning at 1509 hrs. We are all excited. The boys will get to see the enormity of the bodies in play and we can all reflect on this grandiose and majestic orchestration and the hand behind it.

Spectacular event for those old enough to appreciate yet young enough for the entire "WOW" effect.
Glad you will be in the zone just be sure to hydrate accordingly.

We live almost in the center of totality. I will be watching but I think locally it has been way overplayed. But since we live out in the sticks I am sure we will notice no change.

I was going on NY Lakesider's post as a retired welder, as I he suggested he could use one.
Now I wonder how many of the "solar glasses" that have been snapped up actually meet the required specs? I guess we'll find out as the lawsuits start after the eclipse...

We reside in the 100% eclipse zone in Missouri. We will have a perfect view if the clouds stay away. I’ve invited friends and family who live farther north in Missouri and Illinois, but I doubt they will show up because of the expected traffic nightmare.

I am just barely inside the totality zone, expected totality at my house will probably be only around 45 seconds. But it may well be zero regarding actually seeing it as a cloudy overcast day is predicted. Had sort of considered driving about 40 miles north or west where the duration will be close to four minutes, but have already decided not to bother due to the cloudy forecast.

Weatherman says cloudy and chance of showers for us, so doubt we'll see much of the eclipse, if any.
No biggie, we certainly need the moisture a lot more !

Early morning rain in the Cleveland Ohio area is long gone and the sun is shining and waiting to be blocked by the moon. Bring it on, we are ready. Maybe some thin high Cirus clouds later, Larry

With a little more than there hours remaining to totality, the satellite view shows that south and east Texas are cloudy and the cover does not appear to be moving off. Probably no clear skies for us to view the eclipse. But Dallas looks clear.

Most welding goggles are not safe for watching the solar eclipse | king5.com
In short:
Quote:
The shade number on welding goggles usually ranges from 4 to 14, with higher numbers indicating darker lenses, Phillips Safety Products says.
NASA says the only welding goggles that are safe for direct viewing of the sun are those of shade 12 or higher. But this is higher than the shade that’s typically used for most types of welding.

"This one goes up to 11" Oh, wait...
Being far from The Blessed Event, I won't be putting either of my auto-darkening helmets to the test, but I think mine may only go to 10. I'm just a "weekend welder" but at my age I notice that my eyes are not as sensitive as they once were, and I find I need more light generally, especially for detail work, including welding.

It's satisfying getting the rest to go your way, isn't it. A few years back I stopped all work in the facility I was in when I said in the front office, "Nearly time for the recorder at home to start taping the America's Cup final race. It's the decider with New Zealand." The front office lady and the facility boss looked at each other and said, That sounds interesting, turn on the lobby TV." Pretty soon everyone was in the front office and asking me about those fancy flying yachts, and as a bonus, the US won.

Why sad?
What's the big deal anyway? The world is at war, the USA is in total conflict, front page news only talks about yesterday's football game and Taylor Swift's latest excursion.
There are a lot of things we need to worry about, some of which we might even have control over. Like how we will keep the lights on in our house when everybody is forced to buy an EV. If Taylor were parachuting down with a known wardrobe malfunction I would't bother watching her either.

Here in Williamson it's been hit or miss. Right now it's mostly cloudy, but we've had times when the sun broke through. Getting close to our brief totality, but I'm expecting a phone call I'll probably miss it.

The US TV media have not surprised me. More views of the various journos and spectators than the actual eclipse. The Mexican channel are doing better. At least when they show a talking head they are in the small part of the split screen, with the big part showing the eclipse.

I’m in Pasadena, TX on the southwest side of Houston and snapped this one during a little break in the clouds.

And the location it was taken from.
