Well, I just finished watching one of my all time favorite westerns, The Sacketts. To me, this movie has it all. To start with, it has a ton of great, recognizable actors including Tom Selleck, Sam Elliott, Jeff Osterhage, Glenn Ford, Jack Elam, Slim Pickens, Buck Taylor, Ben Johnson, John Vernon, Gene Evans, and some others that I know I’m forgetting. It doesn’t hurt that I am a huge Selleck and Elliott fan. It has good vs. evil and a David vs. Goliath feel. It has great scenery. It has horses, cattle, rifles, six guns, gold fever, pretty women, fancy shooting, Poker and card sharps, and very sharp Bowie knives. While being a long movie, it keeps your attention throughout. I liked it so much that I had a Western brand Bowie knife made into my mountain man Tell Sackett knife, including a stag crown handle and over the shoulder leather sheath. The sheath was designed and made by our own Wyatt Burp. I believe he did a fantastic job! What’s not to like? Who else is a fan of this classic western movie?

I like the movie well enough, but I love the Sackett series of books.

If you really want to know The Sacketts, read the books like Faulkner said! They cover a lot more than the movie that doesn't even cover the content of one volume of the set. They are excellent and probably just as good as Louie L'amours work.

I've never seen the movies but I have all of Louis L Amour's books on the Sacketts. It's probably been 15 years since I last read them. I need to dig them out and go through them again.

I grew up around some real cowhands. One was a pool rider on the Flattops of Colorado. Spent his entire summer alone in a cabin in the high country. His only gun was a single shot 22 Savage rifle with a welded together firing pin and his knife was a Colonial barlow bought new for $5.

I started reading Louis L'Amour when I was about twelve, and have read at least most of them, some several times. Growing up in SE Alaska and having no TV lead me to read almost anything I could get my hands on, and I always recognized that his novels were pretty accurate in the firearms department. "Sitka" was one of my favorites since a lot of it took place in the vicinity where we lived.

I read my first Louis L'Amour book when I was 15 (51 years ago) and got hooked. While the shooting exploits are some times stretching it I really enjoy the series and have almost every one of his books in the leatherette collection. My favorite? The Daybreakers. The movies based on his books typically are well done and worth watching.

A few ago, saw Buck Taylor at a SASS event.

Dad collected almost the whole set of Louis L'Amour titles in the faux leather hardback form. When he passed they came to me. I have added many of the missing volumes and I think I only have 3 left to find.

While I really like the Sackett series of his books, my favorite is The Walking Drum. Yol Bolsun!

Going off memory only but wasn't the Sackett movie based on The Daybreakers?
Got hooked about age 15 and again when my parents retired to the area the Sackett clan began in NC.

I consider this to be the best gunfight scene ever filmed. And not a shot fired.

I'm also one who's read a lot of the Sacketts books. I don't know if I got all of them, but I got a lot of them.

Hopefully, you can help me out. I love The Sackett’s movie and like to read too. I understand Louis L’Amour wrote many books about the family, and I can’t get or read them all, but would like to add some to my library. Which do you recommend to get if I wanted to get 5-6 and what order to read them in? The more suggestions, the better. I will try to do whatever the most folks suggest.

The Talons and Sacketts were kin. Em Talon was born a Sackett. In Ride the Dark Trail, Logan Sackett helps out Em Talon and Milo and Barnabas Talon. In the man from the Broken Hills, Milo Talon is the main character but I believe there's some Sacketts involved.

For those interested in The Sacketts, and are looking for more info than what was in the novels, I recommend The Sackett Companion. Lots of info including a Sackett family tree. Also he describes some of what he had planned to do with the Sacketts, the Talons and the Chantrys.

This reminds me of Skip Sackett who was a well known regular here especially on the reloading forum. He forgot more about reloading than most people ever knew. For some reason he was abruptly banned about ten years ago. Miss the guy and his knowledge.

Where we go one, we go all

After agreeing on our faith in The Lord Jesus Christ, I believe it was our mutual love of Westerns that brought my bride and me together.

I especially enjoy the “newer” Westerns with Sam Elliott, Tom Selleck, Barry Corbin, et al. IIRC Tom Selleck spent about $35,000 on his own gear for ‘Monte Walsh”. I really enjoy “Crossfire Trail” too (and Mr. Selleck’s handling of the Schofield revolver).

When my youngest son was about seven, he started borrowing L'Amour books from an older family friend's collection. He would devour them nonstop.

So...I grabbed one titled "Jubal Sackett" to see what was so interesting.

Couldn't put it down. Fantastic read.

The book is (almost) always better than the movie.

I bought my copy of the Sacketts DVD at Goodwill for less than $5.

Due to Sam Elliott's support for gun control I really don't have any use for him and that's all I'm going to say about that.

The DVD version of the Sackets covers The Daybreakers and Sackett and it does a reasonably good job of it but they really screwed up the ending

L'Amour has a lot of good reads.... for folks like us.

Think I've read them all at least once........ like the Hallmark Channel a lot follow similar story lines, but still worth the time!

In his biography Education of a Wandering Man Louis L'Amour acknowledged that he repeated the same 4 or 5 plots multiple times but he also said that only 4 or 5 plot lines even exist in literature.

I'm not sure if that's true but people are still buying his books 35 years after he died.

At one time I had the complete set of Bantam paperbacks but I ended up selling them.

I have all The Sackett books and his novels ( Last of the Breed, The Lonesome Gods, The Walking Drum) and the like but I'm not really interested in the new re-releases that his son has been publishing. I think Bendigo Shafter was my favorite.

I remember one of his stories in which the hero grew up with Billy the Kid and meets him in New Mexico and calls him Billy Antrim but I can't remember the title. If anyone can help me out with the title I'd appreciate it.

Well, I wish I had come back here again earlier because I tried to order 8 titles :

Two excellent movies! I'm thinking, "$35K for his own gear?!" I recall nice holster, nice saddle... Maybe nice hat and and a nice horse..Maybe nice six gun... But... $35K?! Really?

Love that scene where he picks up the 1876 in Crossfire Trail, too.

Selleck has really been an excellent actor in Westerns for our generation.

Like his Jessie Stone movies, too.

Treasure Mountain is good one. Galloway and Lando are also good and introduce new Sacketts. Mustang Man is good and don't forget The Warriors Path. They're all pretty good, actually.

If you get an opportunity to find it, the book Monte Walsh may be one of my favorite westerns ever. It is or has been long out of print but was released as an audio book about 2015. There are used ones on the market. It follows a horseman through life and change from about 1870 through the age of automobiles. The language is classic as are the antics.
Jack Schaefer may be best known for Shane but wrote some other great books too.

Our local Library has about 20 or 30 of the hardcover editions on the shelves. I've got about 40 paperbacks from the 80s which tend to deteriorate..... the acid paper and glue just don't hold up!

I would highly recommend to anybody that you get all 18 books. Then find the list of the titles in chronological order and read them in that order.

Thanks very much for sharing this information. I will try to pick up Treasure Mountain again. Does his “How The West Was Won” have anything to do with the show starring James Arness?

I am not sure if the books I am getting are original print or reprinted ones. I have always preferred reading hardcover books, and the leatherette ones will be a nice addition to my library.

Well, I received my 7 Louis L’Amour books in the mail today. The seller was fantastic. They arrived lightning fast and well packaged. The best part is they appear to be brand new. The leatherette cover on all of them is perfect and when I opened the covers on all the books to glance at the insides, they were “stiff” like they had never been opened before. They are all dated as Smoke listed, and I will read the ones I got in his suggested order. I am extremely pleased to add these gems to my library, and look forward to reading them all!

Tyrel was played by Jeff Osterhage. While he was definitely not as well known as Selleck and Elliott, I thought he did a great job. Here is his Wikipedia information that shows, other than The Shadow Riders, he didn’t do much to advance his career.

Y'all done did it...Now I'm back to the races. I've pulled all of the Louis L'amour stories offen the bookshelf so I can read 'em again. I always did like the Sackett sagas. I also enjoyed the Walking Drum. That man was a troubadour of the original kind

Anyone read the WA Johnstone series of Westerns? I am on my 8th and enjoying it as much as any L'More books.

Wonder why none were ever made into movies or shows?

PS. Tom Selleck usually prides himself in accuracy of weapons used, but in his trilogy especially, Last stand.....there are many deviations on firearms that had not been invented yet. Like the 1873 Colt the was carried by Cable Hogue and used 45 colt cartridges.

Several things. Cable Hogue was played by Jason Robards in the movie The Ballad of Cable Hogue. It took place in 1905, so an 1873 colt would be appropriate. Last Stand at Saber River, with Tom Selleck was set shortly after the Civil War. In it, Paul Cable uses an 1860 Colt with a cartridge conversion, made by his wife, a gunsmith. This could also be correct, depending on how long after the war it was. I believe Colt started selling the converted guns in 1873.
