Our 13 year bichon chihuahua mix passed away today after acute kidney and liver failure. He was on meds for a heart murmur and Cushing’s, but the sudden onset of organ failure over the last few days did him in. He was my 15th dog (yes, I’m old), but his passing has hit me harder than anything, including my brother’s death last year. Not looking for answers, because tonight I’m finding them in a bottle of Scotch and it’s halfway gone. He was a great dog, a friend and companion who was always under my feet making dinner, insisting that I share, and always getting into the cat’s food. But he was always there for me and I miss him more than I can say. I’m heartbroken.

Chuck I've felt your pain many times over the years . I don't drink , so I can't drown my sorrows . But I will go give my 3 girls a hug for you , ah , make it 2 . And of course Rusty posted that beautiful comic and the tears started rolling .

I'm sorry.

Always a heartbreaker but after a brief period of time we always get another faithful companion. I know I will have one at my side when it is my time to go.

I went through the same thing on Valentine' Day with our little girl Mandy. She was 19, and had been going downhill for about two years. At the end she was deaf and nearly blind, and we had to keep her diapered for about the last four years. But we didn't mind the bother. That morning she started screaming. No other word for it. We took her to the vet and he said there was nothing else he could do for her.

I have found that as I get older and more broken, I am more aware of my mortality. It seems to also impact how I view the loss of a pet and its impact on me.
The best tribute to a good pet gone is a successor, which probably needs you as much as you need it.

Sorry for your loss.I lost my little buddy and best friend on January 31st and an still having trouble dealing with it.He was a little Pomeranian that we bought for our daughter and she didn't like him.He obviously felt it and didn't like her back.He went fishing with us,Kayaking,hiking and He loved going on ATV rides!He could look at me and I knew exactly what he was thinking.Hungry,tired,go outside or go for a walk.He was my only semblance of normalcy since I lost my son,one daughter moved to California with her two wonderful boys,other daughter moved to Florida and my wife was diagnosed with Alziemers.Lost my lake house,Sold my hunting land and now it seems waiting to die.These "golden years" have sucked.

I didn't know how depressed I was when we had to let Daisy go. Until I got my Angel. (I made record time driving out to Columbus, Ohio!) I will never yell at her when she's camped out under my feet, because one day one of us isn't going to be here.

I often look at my current dog and ponder on why we love them so much. I mean they're just an animal, not human, just a living 4 legged creature that hangs around and needs to be fed and often times groomed.

We have to bathe them, take them in for expensive shots and we spend our hard earned money buying toys and fluffy beds for them. Why?

Well, I think it's because they love us for no reason at all really. I mean we don't have to do anything, but be kind to them for a dog to love us back. They love it when we feed them, scratch their belly or show them any attention at all. They seem to adore us for just being there sometimes.

I've really lost count on the number of dogs (and cats) that have been an important part of my life all these 65 years I've lived. I don't understand why their lifespans are so comparatively short either. But it's never stopped me from finding another happy little four legged critter to share my days with.

I am sincerely sorry about your loss Chuck, and I truly feel the pain of loss you are going through right now and understand it completely. It sucks big time.

I pray you soon find it in your heart to rescue another 4 legs, to brighten both your and their lives! I cannot imagine going through the rest of my life without looking into the loving and adoring eyes of a dog each day. They are a special gift from God.

Hate this. I’ve loved Chihuahuas ever since the Taco Bell ads from the 1990s. I’m so sorry for your loss. But remember, death is not the end.

It has been 10 years since we lost Snuggles, my avatar. I know your pain. I am asking you from the bottom of my heart, with tears streaming down my cheeks that the best thing you can do is get another shelter mix dog or puppy.

You will be happier, your heart will feel "dog joy" again over the simple things. You will give a deserving animal a joyous life they deserve. Your new dog may even steal your heart, at the very least joy will return to your life.

I am so sorry for your loss.

My animals have been my best friends, all my life. You will never find anything or anyone more loyal then a good dog or a good cat (yes, they can be awesome too).

I've lost some over the years, mostly due to age or health issues, but they were so very loved, and I by them.

I am also sure there is another dog out there who could use a lot of love and a good home. I've never looked at it as "replacing" my lost friends over the years, but saving a new one.

Life is too short to be without the love of a good animal.

I hope you heal with time. It's never easy.
