30 Million in Cash stolen in L.A. area
CNN is reporting sometime between Saturday March 30th and Monday April 1st. Thief's broke into a Money storage facility and made off with 30 Million in CASH. Entry was made through the roof. No other details were given.
It appears that the bandits decided to Go Big Or Go Home. I know I should not feel this way, but I can't help but admire anyone who has a set of stones to pull a caper like that.

So I'm not the only one who often has begrudging admiration for the bad guys when they pull off a heinous crime. I'm sure the psych profession has a name for it, although I think "conflicted" covers it quite well.

It is really hard to spend that much cash without getting unwanted attention.

This is allegedly 1 million in cash. Hauling 30X that amount out through the roof wouldn't be easy.

I can't imagine any way to get away with it and stay in the United States. I also can't imagine any way to get that much money on an airplane anywhere.
I don't see how they could spend that much money without somebody noticing it.
ETA to paraphrase Hans Gruber, if you steal $30 you can just disappear but if you steal 30 million dollars they will find you

According to the article, the theft occurred at an "unnamed" money storage facility that held cash from local businesses...
Hmmmm.... Why wouldn't 30 million be earning 5% interest? They're giving up $125,000 per month!
The only businesses I can think of that can't put their money in a bank are pot shops.

Apparently, the $30 million earned SOME kind of interest.
I suppose it was out of the USA before they opened Monday morning. And no security?

Get several motels on credit, claim that every room is always booked at a high rate. 20 rooms at $200 a room is $4000 a day and about 1.5 million a year. Buy more motels every year. Buy some pots shops, government requires everything is in cash, claim lots of sales. Always pay cash for stuff under 10K
Plus, you could live real decent, but low key and I bet nobody would notice you dropping a grand a day if you just spread it around in a fair sized city.
One person didn't get it all. I doubt any one person got ever a 1/3 of it

Look at the photos! It went through one of the walls, when it did not matter who knew about the "Stick Up." Too late to catch me now. It was brilliant.

Lot of $20 in that photo
A million in $100s weighs 22.2#, 30 mill would be 666#. LOL
It would also take up 12 cubic ft. A box 2'x2'x3' if very tightly packed or about 10 big sea bags full
Take all that times 5 if it was $20s
If it was 1/3 $100, 1/3 $50s and 1/3 $100 it would be 222# +444# +1110# for a total of 1776# and 32 cu ft so a box 3'x3'x3'-8" or at least 24 large size 12" x 20" sea-bags stuffed full

I can only think of one organization with the cajones, connections, and resources to pull off that heist, but they traditionally do it through taxation.

Keeping a low profile is key with large amounts of cash. Arguing loudly with the salesman over whether you should pay the $499 doc fee on a new Maserati while flaunting a large envelope stuffed with $100s is not the way to go.

Just read this in the article...
Quote:
A federal source said investigators were trying to complete a full accounting of the missing cash....
|
I bet at least one person with an account at that facility swallowed hard on reading that in the paper.

I agree about getting that much money out of there. Just taking 1 million and quitting would be a great amount. Had to take hours, Larry

It sounds an awful lot like the heist that was depicted in the movie “Empire State” with Dwayne Johnson and Liam Hemsworth. I wonder if the perps gained any inspiration from it.

The theft occurred at an Armored Car company cash processing facility. Very well planned I imagine. And they didn’t just guess their way in through the roof without triggering any alarms ….
And the JFK heist was $7m from the secure cage room at the Lufthansa Airline Cargo building. They had keys and insider info.
Same thing with a similar $18m theft in LA in 1996.

"Unnamed" money storage facility????
Sure sounds above question and reproach to me (rolling eyes).
Granted, it looked like little more than a warehouse. But either way it's security wasn't questionable...it was non existant.
Like a rotting mackerel in the moonlight, this situation shines brightly yet reeks horrendously.

I wonder how long it will be before one of the participants posts a selfie on Facebook or Twitter taken while the theft was in progress.

Unless it all went immediately south of the border I am predicting that they will be caught forthwith. Either an inside job or opportunists who will start throwing cash around arising suspicion.

You would think some one who was smart enough to locate and steel 30 million in cash would be smart enough to lay low.

We recently watched the movie "Finding Steve McQueen" 2019 ". In 1972, a gang of close-knit thieves from Youngstown, Ohio attempt to steal $30 million in illegal contributions and blackmail money from President Richard Nixon's secret fund." Perhaps that might have been the inspiration for this heist?
