Default Best kitchen gadget in 50 years

Jarkey Jar Opener

Best kitchen gadget in 50 years. I bought one of these things, and it's amazing. Wish I had one 50 years ago. If you ever wrestled getting the lid off a jar, get one, you'll thank me for the tip after you use it the first time.

I have indentured grandsons for such tasks.

Although their maintenance cost is markedly higher than $16.57.

I just stick a butter knife blade up under the lid and twist lightly. But it definitely is not as easy to open stuff now as it was back when.

Rotate the edge of the lid and tap it several times lightly on a countertop, then open. I can't recall a time when this didn't work.

Since the 1950s I've just, like everyone
else I have known, just dent the top edges
of the lid and then they come off easily.

I've used the dull edge of a heavy knife,
the edge of a can opener, whatever, to
do the job.

Looks like one could use the tool to tap the side of the lid to achieve the same.

Usually jar lids which are difficult to remove are under vacuum. I usually poke a small hole in the metal lid with a nail or a knife to relieve the vacuum.

Yes, or the handle end of a table knife or many other things handy in the kitchen. Kitchen gadgetry is much like handloading gadgetry; lots of gimcracks that aren't needed and serve no practical purpose. I've bought them myself.

Turn the jar upside down and lightly bang the lid on the counter 3 times. Turn the jar right side up and twist the lid off. Simple. No gadget required.

Do we now need instructions on jars?

Bang the jar against something...Not your head.

Yup. Grandma used to whack the top edge of the lid with the dull side of a butter knife a few times to break the vacuum seal and then the lid would twist off easily.

That's basically all this gadget does - break the vacuum seal.

So far I'm still able to break the seal by twisting on the lid, but I when the time comes that I can't, I remember how grandma used to do it without any special tools.

Default Use a screwdriver

We use a screwdriver instead of the above mentioned table knives.

Insert under edge and twist. Hear that releasing POP!

I just smack the jar on the bottom with the palm of my hand . Hydraulic pressure will break that vacuum . You'll hear it .

I’m with DWalt, poke a small hole. Comes off easily. We do have a small lid remover made for them when I can’t get a small lid to twist like on water bottles. Arthritis is taking over, Larry

If you are not going to reuse the jar lid, take an ice pick and punch a hole thru the top. This break the vacuum which is holding the jar lid in place. Jar lid comes off easy with the vacuum released.

This explains why all our eating utensils are all bent up. I have about 74 different screwdrivers down the cellar, and two in the dining room drawer.
Yeah, the .45 works best and it's more fun.
Edit: I HAVE used a strap wrench. I left it in the kitchen and never saw it again!

Was invited into the Officer's chow hall and one young
Second Lieutenant was dressing down two of the kitchen staff who setup the tables, as the mustard jar lids were on way too tight and not lined up properly with the other items in the middle of the table.
So this young NCO pulled out his 1911/45ACP and fired 8 times.
Each round gently touched the side of the lid, spinning it loose, and moving the mustard jar to its proper location.
True story.

Me too.
On occasion, I have had to use 2 strap wrenches to get the job done. They were sold for replacing water filters. Could probably use them for doing an oil change, too!
