Default 55 years ago today

I left Rutherford, TN for San Antonia, TX for Air Force Basic Training. left on a Greyhound bus at zero dark thirty for MEPS in Memphis, TN. from Memphis to Dallas was the first commercial flight I had ever been on. it was a four engine prop job of some kind. 21 years, 2 months and 15 days later I retired from the Air Force. six continents and 28 countries and got paid to see them all. still get my "overtime check" the first of every month. Lee

Congrats, Lee.

You have a terrific attitude and opinion about your experience.

Joining 52 year ago last month was the best thing I ever did: 28 years, 4 months, and four days.

Never been in the military and looking back I wish I would have joined either the AF or Coast Guard. I would have went in in 1980 after high school during the no war Reagan years. But I fell right in to a manufacturing job making what men supporting a family were making and I was living at home with my parents and chasing girls at night. No way I was going to leave that.

I picked the Army over the other branches mostly because at the time they were offering big education bonuses (over and above whatever they were calling the GI Bill at the time) to folks enlisting in understrength MOS categories. Allowed me to finish the last couple years of undergrad and pay for the first year of grad school. Guess it was worth it.

58 years this month I got a free bus ride from Roanoke Virginia to Ft Jackson
, South Carolina. A few months later I was given an all expenses paid trip to see some of the most beautiful mountains and jungles in Southeast Asia. What more could a Hillbilly from West Virginia ask for?

It's been almost 49 years since I reported for basic training at Lackland, and a few month further away from reporting to SSgt Barner at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi. Small world indeed! Thank you SSgt Barner (I know you went higher than SSgt, but my memory of you is as a young SSgt that people respected and listened to)

Feb. 12, 1971 I boarded a plane in NC and landed in TX for basic training. I still miss mid-rats at the chow hall after all these years. Twenty years, six months, and nineteen days.

April 24 2024 it will be 61 years for me, flying a super constellation from Newark N.J. to Lackland AFB. I only stayed in for my four year hitch.
