Default RIP Dickey Betts

Dickey Betts, guitarist and vocalist for the Allman Brothers Band, died today at 80. I hope the brothers had the guitar tuned when he got there.

He was a master at shadowing/harmonizing lead lines by playing in fourths. It is not as easy as one would think.

I met him through my sister who was friends with Danny Toler and his sister. Dickey and Dan were in Great Southern at the time.

Oh man...I saw Allman Brothers at Nashville's Starwood Amphitheatre in the late 80's...Him and Warren Haynes were so great together.

My two favorite songs with Dickey at the forefront are "Whipping Post" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed".

Off to YouTube now.

They did a song called "End of the Line" in the early 90's that was one of my favorites of their catalog...There used to be a clip on YouTube of them playing it on David Letterman's show.

I was playing guitar at the time and hit my stride gigging about the time they lost Duane, and living in WV in the 70's we played gigs in a three state area where a lot of folks had not yet been turned onto to the Allman Brothers, so it was "new material" to them (ya have to remember there was scant TV exposure for the Allmans at that time and you didn't hear a lot of their stuff on radio stations in the smaller, more remote markets.
"Whipping Post" was one of our favorites to cover - I always got a kick out of it watching a bunch of high school and college guys with two left feet hit the dance floor and thought they were just cruising along until the one "off" measure was hit during the riff between verses and they couldn't figure out how they got out of step/rhythm.
Always made me smile and reminded me of the introduction on the old "Gomer Pyle Show" where Sgt. Carter was shadowing Jim Nabors as they marched, yelling at him as he attempted to get in step with everyone else . . .

Around 1970 The Allman Brothers played a prom at Columbia High School in DeKalb county Georgia. I had neighbors who were in school there and saw that show. Is anyone left from the band now?

We moved to Jacksonville after the Allman Brothers made it big and left here. But Lynyrd Skynyrd was rising at the time. I was oblivious to them, though they played at Playground South right in our neighborhood.

That’s the first time I’ve really seen them play. Dickey really was the star of the show.

One of my guitar heroes. I blame him and Toy Caldwell for getting me hooked on Gibson Les Pauls. And while I would occasionally revert back to one of my old classic MIA Telecasters, I would always play Jessica on a Les Paul.

Dickey Betts on one of my favorites, "Ramblin Man". As the Righteous Brothers sang...."Heaven's got a hell of a band". RIP Mr. Betts and thank you for your music.

Allman Brothers were one of my top 5 favorite bands.

Only saw them once July 1, 1979 at the Legend Valley Dixie Jam in Thornville Ohio with the Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, Pure Prairie League, and McGuffey Lane.

Now that’s a line up of some fantastic music to be sure !
Several years ago I had the pleasure of seeing Dickey Betts and Great Southern at the Syracuse NY Blues festival. As they played the crowd grew larger and larger. They ended up playing for almost two hours to one of the largest crowds the Festival ever had at the time.

RIP Mr. Betts you will be sorely missed.

Took my girl friend with me. We spent the night before the concert at the Holiday Inn...along with all the bands.

I had really long hair back then, when I walked into the hotel to check in several girls asked me what band I was with. I bet I could have had an even better time if I'd went alone.

Early 1971 they played at Troy University, Troy Alabama. I was at Ft. Rucker, AL at the time and was familiar with their work. Wanted to go so bad but I had to get up at 4 A.M. to fly. I figured they would be jamming till 1 so I had to pass. That was the closest I got to hearing them in concert. I have all their albums. When I heard of Dickey's death Ramblin Man floated through my brain.

Fast forward to the 1990's in Dallas there was a local band called the StratoBlasters with three lead guitars that played a lot of Allman Brothers. One of the guitar players owned a big guitar shop in Dallas so they plays mostly close in to the big D. Went to hear them at Fatso's. A worthy AB tribute band with 3 part guitar harmonies.

Dickey Betts, born a ramblin man.

I can still remember being a college freshman riding around in my '65 Galaxie in 1972 listening to Eat A Peach on 8-track. R.I.P. Mr. Betts.

Three of my college friends ended up in South Florida. All were single at the time, and they rented a big old house in Coral Gables. One Saturday in the mid-80s they decided to have a party, and one of the guests arrived with Gregg Allman in tow. When one of the friends announced he was going to make a beer replenishment run, Allman volunteered to take him, as he was parked at the end of the driveway.

Allman had recently purchased one of the new C4 Corvettes, and he liked to drive fast. My friend said he had never been as scared to ride with someone as he was that night.

The Allman Bros have been among my favorite bands for well north of 50 years. They spoke to me on every musical level. I had the pleasure to see him play with the Brothers and also Great Southern a few times. Dickey was always at the top of his game.
Yes, Betts played mostly Les Pauls, but I've also seen him play a Gibson 335 and Paul Reed Smith Customs from the early 90s.
I also saw his son Duane Betts play with him and GS. He is now in a band with Gregg Allman's son, Devon. They are carrying the ABB musical torch and definitely worth a listen. RIP Dickey.

The Allmans do a great version of Hendrix' "1983...A Merman I Should Turn to be"
