That Will Leave a Mark
Ukraine destroyed a TU22M3 'Backfire' strategic bomber that had just fired a a missile at Ukraine - the bomber was 200 miles inside Russia. They used a Ukrainian-modified Russian anti-aircraft missile. Gotta love it!

LOL. Not entirely untrue. Being struck by a missile could cause a technical malfunction.
How do you say, "being economical with the truth" in Russian?

Did the crew eject? Looks like they would have had time. IVAN is a hard job.

The SA-5 missile is a big stick. It weighs over 7 tons, is more than 35 feet long, and carries a 450+ lb warhead. The SA-5 fire control radar is rumored to be an enlarged copy of the British Type 86 system used with their Bloodhound SAM. Popular theory is that some Soviet spy walked off with a set of schematics for a system the UK had sold to a European customer. Oops.

Y'all should recall that Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union along with Russia and a bunch of other countries a while back when the SA-5 was being developed. It's hardly a "Russian" missile at all. Some may remember that its long range prowess was proven in a very unfortunate way when an SA-5 shot down an airliner over the Black Sea during a Ukrainian training exercise due to a foul up in the conduct of the exercise.

Had to search a bit to find an SA-5 pic that has something to reference for size.

Wonder if the radar threat detector on the bomber didn't flag the targeting radar as hostile? Assuming it had the equipment-and it worked.

A quote from John McCain on the SAM missiles. "Flying telephone poles"
On his 23rd mission over North Vietnam, on Oct. 26, 1967, he was flying through heavy flak over Hanoi, dodging SAM missiles that looked "like flying telephone poles," when he heard a "beep" signaling that a SAM had locked on to his plane.

The Ukrainians have hinted that the missile had some non-standard features. There are a laundry list of what that may mean, but I would hazard that most involve cutting down the amount of time the engagement radar has to be on. Keeping that time short gives the target less time to react. Of course, the radar warning system of the attacked aircraft may still recognize a former Soviet signal as friendly. Not so much, these days.

I watched the video. Why did they pan the camera to the left before the plane went out of sight and hit the ground? A little suspect??

That will make a mark all right, about 10 feet in radius on the ground!

Because even civvies in Russia get squeamish about watching/filming an impact. Besides, if we are talking about the same video, there was a house or wall that would block the view of the impact site anyway.

Yes, they did. Unfortunately, they got caught in a crosswind, landed in Papua New Guinea and were eaten by cannibals before rescue arrived.

Don't believe everything the filtered media brings to you. A waste of our dollars as it's not going to change a thing. We could have used the money at home.
I don't say that because I am not concerned. I happen to be Polish, Russian and Ukrainian.

Is it okay if I believe what I see on the ground in Armenia and Georgia (the one wherein Tbilisi, not Atlanta, is the capital)? How about if I believe what the US trainers from security assistance projects for Embassy Kyiv tell me?
Just checking.

We are not the only nation that benefits from Ukraine defending itself. But we foot the biggest part of the bill. Same old same old. But I suppose that’s another thread.

Don't be too sure. As of January 15, 2024:
EU institutions - 77.2 billion euros
US - 66.2 billion euros
Germany - 21 billion euros
UK - 16 billion euros
Denmark (yes, Denmark) - 8.4 billion euros.

Any time I catch myself questioning the resources we send to Ukraine; I ask myself what would my favorite POTUS be saying today...the man who said this: "Support for freedom fighters is self-defense". Yes, that man would be Reagan.

Just for the record thank John Candy for the title of this thread.
"After Eagle 5, our flying Winnebago, crash-landed… John Candy came up with a great line," Brooks explained. "Candy, gingerly unfastening his seatbelt, ad-libbed, 'Oh! That's gonna leave a mark.'
The more equipment Russia loses the better.

It's great news. I think another billion trillion dollars are in order. Or is it trillion billion? No matter, it's the same amount. We can afford it. Fire up the printer! Yay war!

Sure glad the French sent equipment, advisors, troops, and their fleet when we needed them when we fought for our freedom.
I truly don't understand the 'we've got ours; tough on everyone else' philosophy. We have ours because got help when we needed it.
