Big Brother
Do any of you folks use the insurance feature that tracks your driving to get a reduced rate? Allstate’s is called “Drivewise”, I believe. I have a 2006 Ford F150 and my insurance keeps going up instead of down like I think it should. No wrecks or tickets, and I drive less than 5000 miles per year.
I just don’t know how I feel about having something tracking me constantly when driving, but the discount is pretty substantial. What do you think about it?

I think they use it to charge you more for "hard stops or acceleration" without taking into context what was actually happening on the road.

If your vehicle has On Star or satellite radio or if you carry a cell phone you’re already being tracked. That horse already out of the barn.
No, I’ve never even heard of insurance company’s offering that.

Whether you know it or not, your computer driven automobiles today are tracking you whether you choose to or not. A good friend of mine used to be lead accident investigator for the state. He is now working for the country prosecutor's office as their lead auto accident investigator. He told me that while he was taking computer courses in college he got fascinated by the auto computers. He told me that he is doing an investigation of an accident and the car is equipped with a computer, which nearly everything is today, he has all of the information he needs to tell the truth about what was going on at the exact time of the accident. He has recently ruled against a fellow law enforcement officer about an accident where a fifteen year old kid on a bicycle was killed by a deputy. The deputy lied about how fast he was going, PERIOD. He not only knows how fast the car was going he knows whether the lights were on, what the oil pressure was, water temperature and even many cases where the car was at the time of the accident. He can tell if brakes were applied, everything as long as the computer is intact.
He said "In coming years you may not know where you are but your toaster will."

Anything you do, say, or drive can and will be used against you! I have State Farm and they have it also, but not in anyone I know cars!
It isn't for your benefit, it's for theirs!

I said NO to Allstate many years ago when they offered to track and spy on me. Can't they leave anything alone. My state requires me to have insurance and that's all I want.

I know a guy who had it put on his vehicle as a means to reduce cost. Agent said it could reduce rates.
Apparently the wife was a "hard braker".
Rates went up.

I'm okay with it. In fact, signed up for it. Unfortunately, my wife needs to sign up for it, too, although she rarely drives, and she can't because she uses a Japanese app store on her iPhone and they don't have the required app.
I don't typically drive very far, and I figure I don't care if the insurance company knows where I drive or if I am speeding, which I do fairly habitually, tho at what I consider reasonable speeds for the roads I drive. (No tickets so far, knock on wood.)
I also hardly ever drive at night, and certainly not late at night or in the very early AM, which I understand makes a big difference to the insurance company.
Honestly, I just don't think I am of sufficient interest for Big Bro to knock his socks off trying to track me. And if he does? To quote Rhett Butler, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

How old are you and where do you live? That plays a part in your rates too.
Older people are notorious for accidents

I don’t have On Star or satellite radio, but obviously have a cellphone. I realize that I can be tracked about anytime, but I would definitely be “checked out” anytime I am driving. I think a good many insurance companies are offering it.

The devices that the insurance companies offer don't technically track your location, but instead look for instances of hard acceleration and hard braking. They already know where you live and the general areas you drive just by giving them your address.
Several insurance companies offer to reduce your rate based on your credit score (or they did at one time), reasoning that if someone was careful enough to build up a good credit score then they weren't a crazy driver.
The way our auto insurance rates have been climbing these past few years you would think I was driving a Bentley or a Ferrari instead of a pick up truck...

Insurance rates are on the rise regardless of age, accidents, or where you live. I'm reading similar gripes on UK forums. First, the costs of everything involving repairs have spiked, some of that is supply chain related, some of it is due to the increased complexity of cars, and some down to the huge jump in the cost of utilities the shops use thanks to the Ukraine war.
The other factor very noticeable in the US is the hard core of drivers who got used to empty roads during COVID and were driving at mongo speed. These people point blank refuse to moderate their speed back to what is suitable for the current traffic density. We've had years of it in Vegas and our insurance rates have gone fighter plane vertical because of it. The death toll already this year is mind boggling. Oh, and if it isn't just speed, then it's drugs/booze and speed.
The above factors more than wipe out any benefit most of us think we should be getting for years of no wrecks.

I have that service with USSA and it has saved me 30% on my car insurance. They are big on tracking your cell phone usage and hard braking. No points off for acceleration or speed. Not for everyone, just depends on how you drive.

I signed up with Allstate when I switched from State Farm. The first six months I saved around $300. Next renewal I only saved $13 and change. I'll give it one more go round and see what happens. If I don't see bigger savings I'm going to drop it.
Allstate and State Farm "trackers" work differently.
In addition to tracking how many miles you drive State Farm looks at hard acceleration, hard braking, cellphone use, and whether you drive more than 10 mph over the speed limit as defined by Google maps.
Allstate doesn't care about acceleration or the speed limit. In addition to miles driven, they track whether you drive at 80 mph or above regardless of speed limit (there are highways in Texas with 80 mph speed limits and one or two toll roads with 85, but Allstate doesn't care), hard braking, cellphone usage, and late night driving which is supposedly more dangerous.
Edited to add that while both say you can save up to 30%, State Farm guarantees savings of at least 10% whereas Allstate does not.

I have State Farm and my app says I saved $350.44 for 6 months. Whether that’s true or not I don’t know. I don’t mind using it.Braking 81 Accel 82 speed 94 cornering 100 phone 81. I drive a lifted Super Duty diesel so I don’t know about the acceleration score.

After years with Farmers we just switched to Allstate; almost 50% less on Auto, and close but still savings on home owners. After signing up my local Allstate agent sent me a request for Drivewise. I called up and said I’m not interested in more oversight of my life; she said no worries and thanks for being a new customer.

A buddy of mine had one, and his rate went down. Then they took a trip to Florida and he was keeping up with traffic and his insurance went thru the roof at renewal. Be careful chasing a few dollars.
As for me, if they can find a computer to plug it into they are welcome to it!

People have to understand at which point "keeping up with traffic" becomes speeding. I use 5 over as my standard. If people want to go faster, it's their gas and license. I'll be the guy in the right lane they are passing who will wave cheerfully as they get their ticket a few miles up the 'pike.

FWIW, the body shops around here have signs posted in their office that state they will not release any vehicle until they receive payment from Allstate. It seems Allstate is really bad about paying off claims. If you search on line, it's a reputation they seem to have nationwide. I'm not sure saving money would make up for not getting your car back in a timely manner.

So I'm driving down the road and a deer runs in front of me. I brake hard to avoid the deer and my insurance rates go up? Might as well hit the deer and get a new vehicle before they raise my rates.

How much of the rate increases there are due to all the illegals driving without licenses, drunk, and without insurance?

“USAA uses a phone app:
The USAA SafePilot program offers a chance to earn a discount for your safe driving habits. First, you’ll receive up to a 10% participation discount on your auto insurance policy for enrolling and participating in the USAA SafePilot program. Once you download and set up the USAA SafePilot App, it will automatically begin tracking your driving behavior, starting with a 14-day learning period. The learning period gives you a chance to learn how the app works, and gets to know your driving behaviors, before trips are considered towards your score.
When the learning period ends, you’ll have a fresh start for the remainder of your policy period. After you’ve driven an additional combination of 325 miles and 16 hours, you’ll be able to view your projected household discount of up to 30% for your next policy term.
Participation in the USAA SafePilot program won’t ever raise your premium. It’s simply a way to show you how well you’re driving and help you potentially earn a safe driving discount.
At every policy term renewal, we’ll reset your driving score and give you another fresh start.”

Another thought crossed my mind. What happens when you take your vehicle to get serviced and they test drive it? Kinda like in the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” when they parked the Ferrari in the parking garage!

One tip to reduce your insurances costs, shop around and change carriers about every 3 years or so.
The companies believe they have you as a 'loyal customer' and take advantage of this loyalty by raising your rates every year.
Make sure you are getting the same, ie exact, coverage since changing a limit or amount can change the rate.

When I lived in the Denver metro area I was insured by the Guy with the Emu lastly. Installed one of those doo-dads for three months. 6 month renewal almost doubled. Went to the good hands people. Up here it's a whole different ball game. And cheap.

Absolutely. 100 would be great. When I first started using it I was in the 90’s. Most times now I don’t think about it until I’m asked for an odometer reading.

I’m extremely spoiled. I’ve been driving Ford owned management lease vehicles for 4 decades and have not had to deal with car insurance. Ford does track my driving habits, etc., but they know we don’t listen to the bean counters. I do think that there might be a double standard — if police were monitored they wouldn’t have insurance! It’s either on or off.

Haha. I went back and looked at the screen shot. I cut the zero off.

I just don’t know how I feel about having something tracking me constantly when driving, but the discount is pretty substantial. What do you think about it?

I've got a 2006 F 150 I bought 10 years ago. It is an old fleet truck of some kind. Roll up windows, plastic seats, no cruise control. It does have power and air and the air needs a little refreshment, and if they doesn't work, I don't care. I ain't in it that much anyway. It had 81,000 miles on the clock when I got it in 2014. I needed a farm, hunting, fishing truck and didn't want to spend a lot. I paid $5,025 for it at an auction. The only thing I've done to it is change the oil and filter and one battery. It's got 107,000 miles on it now and may outlast me.
