Caje here. I'm not sold. 3.5 HP Mercury outboard goes for $899.
If I was to go total electric, I'd rather have a 55lb min kota with a couple of deep cycle batteries for a LOT less money.

Pass. You better have a fat wallet and a sturdy craft for all the battery weight you will be dragging around. Screw that.
For small boat motors, I'll keep my fire breathing, dinosaur burning, northern climate improving motor along with the Minnkota for trolling slooooooow.

Our 9.9 merc. works great up at the duck lease...we're lucky to remember to fill the tank!! dont think electric is in our future...the young guy is 63!

I imagine there's a ton of outboard recharging stations on all the bayou banks.

Actually, this motor shows some promise.

Go to the manufactures website for some real info, the Basspro advert deals only in Kw (kilowatts) which is the most meaningless scale ever.

Voltage for electric propulsion (DC) is king, there is a reason cars don't have 6 volt starters any more. Small boat propulsion starts becoming realistic at 24v. A 36v motor is acceptable, 48V will put a smile on your face.

Propeller. no matter what the motor/battery combination the only way to convert all those $$$ to movement is thru the propeller. this motor shows 3 props available, but there is no info on pitch/diamater other than the stock prop.

no info regarding connection of remote battery bank
no info if there is a Tach for monitoring RPM's (vital for determining correct prop)


BUT, this motor warrants further investigation, it looks promising.

A 3.5 hp equivalent can barely keep a canoe running straight at 25% throttle. Throw in a little chop and wind and a 3.5 equivalent would struggle to keep a 12' row boat running true. Throw in an extra body and some gear and you end with something that needs to be tethered to the dock so you can pull yourself back in after 5 minutes.
So I asked myself...Self, who would be stupid enough to buy it? Then I read about two nitwits that came to fisticuffs fighting over their turn at a car charger station and answered my own question.

A 6HP Johnson was the minimum to push our 12' hard bottom inflatable in the Keys or the 15' sloop, with the stick removed, and a fighting chair on the mast step when fishing.
Less than 12" draft and could pole it as necessary.

Tested with a brisk tailwind yet smooth water, on a hot day, going downstream, without so much as a fishing pole onboard and a small for his age 12yr old piloting.

In the early 90's my brother and I were fishing at Cave Run Lake in Morehead, KY. A piece of the flow regulator in the carburetor broke. All we had was a trolling motor. Luckily Dave kept two spare batteries on board. It took us 4 hours to get back to the dock. We almost ran out of beer.

I'll keep my four stroke 10 HP gas Honda until it dies, thank you. Gets to your duck spot faster and can fight a wind gust fine on a 14' aluminum john boat. Bought it in 2003 still boxed as a new 2000 model when my kicker had tasted enough mud. My first rule is never operate a boat that is underpowered in the wind. Helps get back to the landing after fishing half a day going downriver. I'll die before I buy an electric, underpowered outboard. Backed a cable nut out and it runs like a 15.

We would have sunk in tornado warnings after duck hunting without the power and experience. We didn't know we were in a tornado warning, but figured it was time to leave.

Back in the late 70's I had the owner of a bail bond company call me and told me he was fixing to lose $10,000 on a no show. He said he would pay me the bond fee of $1,000 if I could catch the guy. I told him to make it $1,100 and I would do it. I needed the extra hundred to pay for the bait. I knew the guy he was looking for. I also knew his old girlfriend that I knew he still had feelings for. I went to see her and told her I would give her $100.00 if she would put me where I could get him. She called me the next day and told me the bar she was going to meet him at. When he came in he met me instead and we took a trip to the cross bar hotel. I got the $1100, she got the $100, he got seven years, the bondsman saved a lot of money, and back to the original topic, I went and bought a brand new, in the crate 15 HP Evinrude outboard motor for $995 that I used for many years.

Batteries can do great things when aboard a boat but for each one
you have to deleate half the weight of a fishing buddy.

After three large batteies, you might not have a net man on board ? !

Bubba was way ahead of Mercury. Less expensive , goes faster and you blend in better!

Nope not for me.

PASS...........Still not as good as my gas Mercurys......NEVER will be.......When my gas Mercs get me to where I want to be....Then I use my electric trolling motor.......Have zero need for a 7.5 hp trolling motor.

Look at how cordless tools have improved in the last 20 years
I think battery powered boat motors also will become more common in coming years
I mean it’s gotta be better than stringing out miles of waterproof extension cords …

I'd rather use the battery juice to keep beer cold.
