Default A Question for Vets, especially Air Force

Did anyone else get their basic training squadron and flight numbers written on the back of their social security card? I distinctly remember getting off the bus and as we were being yelled at told to get our cards out and they wrote them on the back.

Getting yelled at? Yes, I recall that. First time in my life I'd been yelled at. I found it humorous, but the TI didn't.

The TI didn't tell us to get our SS cards so no writing on them.

My flight wasn't asked to do that, although writing the squadron and flight # on the back of a S/S card sounds like a nice idea. Not sure how much longer I'll remember my squadron and flight # - maybe I'll go write it on the back of my S/S card today! Also not sure when I'll ever need the info again - no one seems to ask me for a 341 any more!

No but I had my last 4 digits ink stamped on my boxers.

Now Ruthie just puts a name tag on them.

No, our bus load of rainbows weren't instructed to do that. I do remember the yelling, tho.

I was in the 3723rd when I went through in '81, but I don't recall them ever asking for that card, much less writing on it.

The intimidation/yelling didn't trigger me much as dad was in the military for 23 years and excelled at *** chewing.

Yeah, AF basic was all about yelling, folding underwear in 6” squares and eating. Real tough stuff. It pays to score high on the ASVAB.

My oldest went in the Army in 1998, came home on Leave and told me "Those Army guys needed me to teach them a thing or two about Yelling!"

Second son went into the Marines in 1999, came home on Leave and told me that "Marine DI's have perfected yelling to an "Art Form" and I still needed lessons!"

I have no idea what my sq number was. and we Rolled our underwear, not folded. I can still quote my S/N, (not a SSN).
This was Sept 1959. Only spent 30days at Lackland, then off to Wichita Falls Tx for Tech School.

No numbers, but I felt SSgt Morales personally hated me. Turned out he hated everyone. I think I was in the 3301 Squadron. Old wood barracks. 1971

Default No Writing On The Back........

But......like all those who have replied, we were yelled at as though we were hard of hearing. We might have been too early for the writing in 1961.

I went through basic from Sep-Oct '71 in the old wooden barracks too.. SS was never mentioned. Lots of yelling until about 3/4 of the way through. Some kind of directive must have come down telling TI's not to yell or something. I can remember for about a week after that directive TGST Junior would sarcastically yell, "Ten Hut, Please!" or "Forward March, Please" , or "Flight Halt, Please" or any other command followed by "Please!" We didn't know what was going on but it was really funny at the time.

June 1971. Wooden barracks. Tropical heat. Wool blankets. Salt tablets. Pugil sticks. Pickle suits with salt rings. Trash can alarm clock. Red butt cans nailed to trees. "Pots and Pans".

"thank you sir may I have another?"

April 1977. TIs were TSGT Grant and SSGT Stiles. Two totally different personalities. Grant was very religious and straight, so no swearing, but Stiles when he was alone with us was another world.

I entered the Air Force in 1981, then was accepted as a MTI in 1984. I was in the 3708th until 1987. Never had anyone write on their SSN card. The yelling wasn't required, just the part I enjoyed.

My son was USAF. He had to do 100 pushups while chanting "There is nothing humorous about AF basic. The TI on the other side of a divider was shouting at a recruit with a dirty razer "Did you shave your privates with this".

100 push-ups
IIRC, to graduate in 1983 we had to do 15 push-ups, 15 sit-ups and run 6 laps (1.5 miles) in 15 minutes while in flight formation. We gradually built up to it over 6 weeks. Tough stuff!

No writing on ss card in Apr. 1963. I guess because we had Af service numbers instead of using SS number. Lots of yelling yes.

I don't think I've done 100 pushups over my lifetime.

I don’t think we did a 100 total in 6 weeks of basic; however; I did do a bunch in the FBI National Academy. Heck, I work up a sweat just watching FMJ.

As a draftee in 1969, our Social Security number became our service number throughout our term. The last 4 along with our reversed initials were stamped of every piece of issued clothing. Army
