Do you have any favorite movies about WW2?
Dad was in Patton's 3rd Army. Safe to say, I like the movie "Patton" with George C. Scott.
But my favorite is a movie called "Battleground" with Van Johnson and James Whitmore. It was made in 1948 and is about the 101st Airborne at the Battle of the Bulge.
You have any favorites?

"Band of Brothers". Technically not a movie, but a limited series, but both an outstanding tribute to the men who fought WWII and as an engaging movie. "Saving Private Ryan" for the vivid portrayal of the D-Day landings. And I understand why you listed "Battleground". Excellent movie and it holds up well even today.

I've seen "Patton", but not "Battleground". Going to look that one up.
"Saving Private Ryan" is certainly way up there as one of my favorites though.

All that are mentioned above.
One that never gets played, or aired is …
“ To Hell and Back” roughly based on the 95th infantry
and their Lorraine Campaign. ( my Dad’s division)

The Battle of Britain, Das Boot, Cross of Iron (even if it does get surreal at the end), A Bridge Too Far, The Longest Day.

Too many to remember…much less list. Twelve O’Clock High…Sands of Iwo Jima…The Best Years of Their Lives…The 49th Parallel…Guadalcanal Diary…The Longest Day…Saving Private Ryan…simply too many great films.
There’s also the little known or remembered films as well but are deserving of attention…The Tanks Are Coming…The Red Ball Express…simply more than I can remember.

"Air Force"
"Desperate Journey"
"Tora Tora Tora"
"A Bridge Too Far"
"30 Seconds Over Tokyo"
"The Desert Fox"
"Flying Tigers"
"Fighting Seabees"
"Sands of Iwo Jima"
"The Dirty Dozen"
"5 Fingers" (more spy than war, but so what? An excellent suspense-filled film set during WWII)
"Destination Gobi"
"South Sea Woman" (a semi-comedy but WWII themed and entertaining)
"12 O'Clock High"

A while back I was assigned a new Lady Doc.
I told her the only I ever heard her name was in a WWII Sub Movie.
Her name is Dr. Bungo.

The Caine Mutiny.
Great story written by a former destroyer-minesweeper officer and WW 2 veteran, Herman Wouk. Bogart is superb, and the rest of the cast is top-notch. I watch it just about every time it comes on TCM, and it never gets old.

I bet she’s had to put up with a lot of innuendo and outright jokes about her name…especially sunmarine and torpedo jokes.

- Sahara
- Das Boot
I will give "Greyhound" an Honorable Mention.

I've seen all the films mentioned here with the possible exception of "Cross of Iron". I may have seen it but don't recall it at the moment.
Many excellent movies listed already, but my #1 pick has always been "The Great Escape". It may be better than all the rest, but the degree of "better" may be slight.

I gotta submit: "When Trumpets Fade". A survivor malcontent is elevated from private to lieutenant in matter of days and takes initiative to successfully act to effect defense, and attack when the difference is not clear.

Lots and lots, all good so far.
In harms way hasn’t been listed yet. Recently, Hacksaw Ridge was a good “sleeper” to me.

The court martial scene (Queeg’s breakdown) is classic.
My favorite (“The Great Escape”) has already been mentioned.

Judgment at Nuremberg…not really a “war movie”, but one of the finest films about WW2 ever made.

It's in my movie library. One of my favorite scenes is when Jose Ferrer exposes Fred MacMurray as the real villain in the drama.

Like 'em all. The Great Escape is probably my favorite, for cast alone, if nothing else. But I also like The Dirty Dozen and Operation Petticoat. Heck, Top Secret is technically a WW2 film and I liked that.

Pretty much all of them made before the turn of the century. Not a fan of revisionism or remakes. All of the above, and will mention Enemy at The Gates, Longest Day, Tora, Tora, Tora, Midway and In Harm's Way. I always remember my father took us to Woodlawn drive in to see Tora, Tora, Tora and the actor that played Yamamoto lamented the late declaration of war and what they had unleashed.

Although not a movie, BoB was an excellent biopic that was very faithful to the book by Stephen Ambrose. Both the book and the vids are in my library and in the tv show, it says the character "Blythe" died of his injuries. That was incorrect. He recovered and went on to make a career of the army. He actually died in 1967 of kidney failure.
Another book/vid combo in my library is Cornelius Ryan's "The Longest Day." The movie is also very faithful to the book.

One of my favorites as well and is a part of my WW2 movie library. An interesting aside, the naval battle scenes were so poorly done (with their model boats and budgetary considerations) that Kirk Douglas begged them to do it over with more convincing props.
IMDb: The climactic battle with the Japanese fleet was staged mostly with model ships. Kirk Douglas thought the special effects were poor and complained to director Otto Preminger and the studio about it. He offered to re-stage the scenes at his own expense, using the special effects people who worked with him on Paths of Glory (1957). He felt the battle at the end of the movie was ruined by the use of very obvious models.

So many to list and so many good ones to prioritize. Just about everything mentioned so far would be on my list. Just to add a few more that many not have been mentioned:
A walk In The Sun
A Wing and a Prayer
The Story of GI Joe
Objective Burma
Destination Tokyo
Command Decision
The Steel Helmet
The Blue Max
The Way Ahead (British)
The Waves Above Us (also British)
The Dam Busters ( British again)
The Gift Horse (another British one)
The Cruel Sea (British again)
The Malta Story (British)
Ice Cold in Alex (British and surprisingly good)
The Cross of Lorraine (US made about French POWs)
And it’s probably already been mentioned:Casablanca
The scene when the French patriots sing the La Marseillaise still can put a lump in my throat. If only we could get the unity within our community……

Mrs Miniver. I’m not even kidding.
SPOILER ALERT:
She captures a Nazi, survives the Blitz, wins the village rose contest, and hubby goes to Dunkirk.
Getting to look at Greer Garson for 2 hours is a bonus.

I haven't seen The Cruel Sea in decades, but I recall the impact it had on me when I first read it at a young age along with HMS Ulysees. Both books popped the balloon on the "glamor" of war.

I got "Das Boot" out of the library, and after 2 chapters I was completely lost and took it back. So, I took out an elementary kids book on submarines and "Run Silent, Run Deep". Read them twice. Then got "Das Boot" back again and understood what was going on. I wonder what I miss in the movies, that is glossed over by actors that were there and want to spare the audience the horrors hey saw.
