Dad was in Patton's 3rd Army. Safe to say, I like the movie "Patton" with George C. Scott.

But my favorite is a movie called "Battleground" with Van Johnson and James Whitmore. It was made in 1948 and is about the 101st Airborne at the Battle of the Bulge.

"Band of Brothers". Technically not a movie, but a limited series, but both an outstanding tribute to the men who fought WWII and as an engaging movie. "Saving Private Ryan" for the vivid portrayal of the D-Day landings. And I understand why you listed "Battleground". Excellent movie and it holds up well even today.

I've seen "Patton", but not "Battleground". Going to look that one up.

"Saving Private Ryan" is certainly way up there as one of my favorites though.

The Caine Mutiny.
Great story written by a former destroyer-minesweeper officer and WW 2 veteran, Herman Wouk. Bogart is superb, and the rest of the cast is top-notch. I watch it just about every time it comes on TCM, and it never gets old.

What, me worry?

I bet she’s had to put up with a lot of innuendo and outright jokes about her name…especially sunmarine and torpedo jokes.

I've seen all the films mentioned here with the possible exception of "Cross of Iron". I may have seen it but don't recall it at the moment.

Many excellent movies listed already, but my #1 pick has always been "The Great Escape". It may be better than all the rest, but the degree of "better" may be slight.

In harms way hasn’t been listed yet. Recently, Hacksaw Ridge was a good “sleeper” to me.

The court martial scene (Queeg’s breakdown) is classic.

My favorite (“The Great Escape”) has already been mentioned.

12 o'clock high, Dad was in the 8th. air force on B-17's.

Some were better than others, but I pretty much like them all.

Definitely To Hell and Back. Very good movie with name brand actors, some of who were actually there.

Like 'em all. The Great Escape is probably my favorite, for cast alone, if nothing else. But I also like The Dirty Dozen and Operation Petticoat. Heck, Top Secret is technically a WW2 film and I liked that.

The best I can with what I got

Pretty much all of them made before the turn of the century. Not a fan of revisionism or remakes. All of the above, and will mention Enemy at The Gates, Longest Day, Tora, Tora, Tora, Midway and In Harm's Way. I always remember my father took us to Woodlawn drive in to see Tora, Tora, Tora and the actor that played Yamamoto lamented the late declaration of war and what they had unleashed.

Not Sure of the name.Lee Marvin was in it I believe the name was the big red one. Is a great movie ,Have not seen it in a long time.

Although not a movie, BoB was an excellent biopic that was very faithful to the book by Stephen Ambrose. Both the book and the vids are in my library and in the tv show, it says the character "Blythe" died of his injuries. That was incorrect. He recovered and went on to make a career of the army. He actually died in 1967 of kidney failure.

Another book/vid combo in my library is Cornelius Ryan's "The Longest Day." The movie is also very faithful to the book.

"Toro, toro, toro." "Bull, bull, bull." I've not seen that movie. Germany ran out of bombs and started dropping livestock?

My favorite will always be “The Sands of Iwo Jima”. Otherwise there are too many to list. For those who like “Band of Brothers”, I thought it was a spectacular piece of work! It will always be a favorite of mine!

One of my favorites as well and is a part of my WW2 movie library. An interesting aside, the naval battle scenes were so poorly done (with their model boats and budgetary considerations) that Kirk Douglas begged them to do it over with more convincing props.


IMDb: The climactic battle with the Japanese fleet was staged mostly with model ships. Kirk Douglas thought the special effects were poor and complained to director Otto Preminger and the studio about it. He offered to re-stage the scenes at his own expense, using the special effects people who worked with him on Paths of Glory (1957). He felt the battle at the end of the movie was ruined by the use of very obvious models.

I haven't seen The Cruel Sea in decades, but I recall the impact it had on me when I first read it at a young age along with HMS Ulysees. Both books popped the balloon on the "glamor" of war.

I got "Das Boot" out of the library, and after 2 chapters I was completely lost and took it back. So, I took out an elementary kids book on submarines and "Run Silent, Run Deep". Read them twice. Then got "Das Boot" back again and understood what was going on. I wonder what I miss in the movies, that is glossed over by actors that were there and want to spare the audience the horrors hey saw.
