Default Best place to rv camp near Mt. Rushmore

Wanting to make a road trip to see Mt. Rushmore this summer. Looking for recommendations to rv camp for a few nights to see the best attractions near there. Full hookups preferred, but partials are fine too. Also, are there some things that should and shouldn't be missed? TIA.

It's been a while; but, on our way there from Billings, we stopped at the Little Bighorn area, the wild horse plateau (Pryor Mtn wild horse range) and Devil's Tower. You may have to park the RV to go up on the wild horse plateau. We drove it in a Jeep Cherokee.

We have always gone after Oct 1st as that is when my wifes' job shut down for the year. I like Custer. It is close enough yet far enough out. I would take a hard pass on Crazy Horse. IMO, the Custer Battlefield is much more PC than it was 40 years ago and I found it difficult to sit through.

Stops on the way there or back would include Reynolds Battle field and Bear Paw Battlefield near Chinook. Leave the camper in town and go the 16 miles in your truck. It is Chief joseph's last stand. Stop in Big Timber and see the Sharps factories. Grand Hotel in Big Timber used to be excellent food but it has sold and is now only very good.

Custer State Park is good as is driving through the narrows.

Timing is everything. Try to miss the last week of July and the first two weeks of August. Traffic will be considerably lighter at a different time.

And the campground rates are higher. Official Rally dates this year is August 2-11, but many riders show up early to beat the rush.

We stayed at Heartland RV Park in Hermosa, SD a few years ago. If you don't mind a typical more open RV park, it's a nice park and very convenient to just about everything you'll want to see in the area. Big enough for big rigs, and plenty of space. Good pizza place within walking distance and ~20 minutes from Rapid City if you need supplies or want to go into town for dinner. We've always planned to go back, but haven't got 'round to it.

As noted above, off season is usually less crowded. We were there in late September.
