Default OTA broadcasting....WTH!!

I have a beef with two stations in particular....DefyTV and H&ITV.

Both stations are fine most of the day but then around 10pm the fun starts. I'd be watching one and during a commercial go to the other one to see what's going on. When I switch back I get a "no signal". I move to get the remote and the picture comes back.

Doesn't matter where in the room I'm at there seems to be a sweet spot for reception. Problem is that if I move even a fraction the signal is lost. Haven't had to stand on one foot yet.

One would think that a digital signal would stay constant but apparently it isn't. I do a program scan every few days and the results are crazy. I get 72 stations one day and 88 the next.

Anyone else experience the same issues? There's still always something else to watch when this happens so I'm not looking at any subscription offers.

Maybe they cut back on the signal strength at night.

Maybe there's an atmospheric thing going on...like losing AM radio reception at night. Maybe a better antenna would solve the problem? I just ordered one of these since I'm in a rural area and the broadcast towers are 50+ miles away.

Those two stations are on different towers. H&I comes from Lookout Mountain, and DefyTV comes from Frederick. Depending in which part of Denver you live in, those could be 180° apart. Depending on what type of antenna you are using and how directional it is, you could well be marginal on signal on one of them and after 10 pm there is some kind of ducting event taking place as the air cools.

I suggest you use the tools on these websites to determine where the towers are in relation to your home and the signal levels you might expect.

If you use the websites I linked above, you might find a bunch more stuff. One thing to watch for is that stations are popping up on the low VHF band, which many of the TV antennas on the market do not cover. Don't get sucked into the "Digital Antenna" rubbish.

Call the stations and ask to talk to an engineer, or the station manger, about the what, why and wherefore of your problem.

All the stations I get are UHF. Signal is strong. Towers are mostly 32mi. in distance.

I also get stations with a fair signal from 65mi. away and have zero issues with reception.

To have problems receiving a station for some hours of the day isn't on my end. The antenna is never moved.

If your antenna is on the roof, I'm at a total loss as to why where you are in the room makes a difference to reception. Does somebody nearby come home with a big van or truck at around 2200? What you describe sounds like a multipath problem.

You might be getting some interference. As you move around you disrupt it. Try a 5G/LTE filter, sometimes the antenna picks up some cell signals. It will filter them out.

cordless phones, microwave and low flying planes have been noted to cause interference too.

That's a good thought. I get occasional disruption on some stations if the traffic pattern at the airport is a certain way. Even digital TV will fall over given enough rapidly changing multipath signal off an airliner.

First off roof antennas aren't allowed (HOA). My antenna is one of those amplified ones plugged into a wall socket next to a window per instructions. Works fine except for when it doesn't.

Funny thing... Any time I use my mini food processor to mince jalapenos I lose the signal for those few seconds of operation.

I also live within a 10mi. radius of both Denver Int'l and Buckley AFB.

The only thing not part of the equation is the tin foil hat I used to wear back in the 70's.

I remember, as a kid, our tv would go all static as certain cars passed our house. My dad always blamed it on the Fords and their ignition systems.

I thought an FCC ruling fixed the HOA nonsense?

Can a Home Owners Association Ban Antennas? We Answer Your Questions | Cord Cutters News

I had one of those amplified antennas. It cured me of indoor/amplified antennas as it proved VERY susceptible to interference on the 115 V supply. Your power company could be doing a lot of load adjustment at night, but I'm clutching at straws here.
