I was in my local Bass Pro Shp yesterday and learned that Bass Pro is closing down all their fine gun rooms across the country with two exceptions.
Today I learned that the two existing Sportsmen Warehouses here in La Vegas that opened in say the last year, year and a half are both closing.

I never understood the marketing/business appeal of the fine gun room deal. Does the average basspro/cabelas customer really buy these type of guns? Or is the idea that people come in to look at the guns they can't afford or are not really interested in but end up buying something else in the sporting goods department?

The average customer probably does not; but with the traffic they get, one in five hundred may be enough. I bought one rifle from the Bass Pro Fine Gun Room at the MO State Trap Shoot a couple of years ago. They will deal, but probably not enough to tempt you unless you really want it.

With both Bass Pro and Cabela's, you can order through their web site and have the gun delivered to your nearest store, eliminating the hassle of finding a friendly FFL.

I have seen S&W guns at Cabellas in MI that I couldn't believe.I say a mint looking 27-2 in presentation case with tools in the $500 dallar range.Seen a 29 and others very reasonable.Trouble was I was on vacation and no spare money(ie,the wife was with me)...Mike

Cabelas built a store locally about a year and half ago. Of the four guns I've bought from that store, three were from the gun library.

The reason that the two Sportsmans Warehouse stores in Vegas are not doing well is because they never have any stock. They are perpetually out of stock on nearly all reloading supplies.

Is the Bass Pro fine gun room here in Vegas closing? I guess there is not much call for $250,000 shotguns LOL.

Will not shop there anymore-My son was back from his second tour preparing to go to Germany and Afghanistan. Tried to buy a pistol at Bass Pro-they wanted a copy of his orders-his license was from a state that he hadn't lived in for years. But he had been moving all over and his home or record was our location. Anyway, they were rude-and I've had this happen before there.

I have bought 4 S&W guns from Cabelas gun rooms. Its kind of like Gun shows, some times you win, some time you lose. I always browse when I'm in there. But seldom buy.

Any FFL dealer would have asked for his orders. They CANNOT sell a handgun to someone from out of state, so he has to prove (with the orders) that he is posted in that state.

My sense is that the firearms in both stores have always been on the high side -- at least, the stores I've been in.

And like some others here, I guess I've figured the fine gun rooms were basically like a museum or something. Ain't no way I could afford or justify spending five figures on a firearm. As for $250,000 for a shotgun -- that's not a price; it's a telephone number.

Home of Record does mean anything for gun purchases. I carried a copy of my current PCS orders my whole career, for several reasons.

(B11) What constitutes residency in a State? [Back]

The State of residence is the State in which an individual is present; the individual also must have an intention of making a home in that State. A member of the Armed Forces on active duty is a resident of the State in which his or her permanent duty station is located. If a member of the Armed Forces maintains a home in one State and the member’s permanent duty station is in a nearby State to which he or she commutes each day, then the member has two States of residence and may purchase a firearm in either the State where the duty station is located or the State where the home is maintained.

I have bought four guns out of the Bass Pro fine gun room; a pre 17 for $400.00, a S & W 39 for $395.00 and two winchester rifles under $600.00 each. I don't have an issue with the $249,000 shotgun, it was neat to see. I like them fine gun rooms for the drool factor.
I brought their closing down those venues as noting a symptom of our new economy. The Sportsmen Warehouse closing in this area is also a symptom. Let's face it sporting goods stores are trying to create business for basically nonessential items and in today's environment that's all uphill. You could look at any of the sporting goods stores; Bass Pro, Cabelas, Sportsman's Warehouse, Schnells, Kttery Trading Post and/or Beans and acknowledge that they aren't selling anything you can't live without. But, we're still poorer without them...course, the reverse arguement can be made that we definately are poorer because of them and the stuff they carry that we think we can't live without.
The comment that the local Sportsman's never had any reloading supplies in stock is part of the problem...everyone is runnng low to nonexistant on anything ammo related.
I was talking to Buds Gun Shop earlier this week and they are concerned about the availablity of guns and how that's effecting their business...they can't keep the more popular firearms in stock to sell. Business is booming but supply chain inventory levels are diminishing. Another sign of the times I guess. I don't really get it.

Just heard that the Sportsman's W. is closing 23 stores nationwide to stem the bleeding... how can they not be making $, esp. now? Look for super-deals coming soon!

I guess it's it's a shame...they have some nice guns, but around here they are always way too high on everything.

Yep, I understand the law-now pray tell exactly what does an "order" look like? And who trains these clowns to recognize an order? Who signs it? How can the clerk corroborate the order?

I've only been in a couple of Bass Pro and Cabelas, mainly the ones out in the Phoenix area when I was TDY out there. I ended up buying several guns from the Gun Library in Cabelas. Just have your dealer/club send them (FAX) a copy of their FFL and you are good to go. I found that they were very willing to bargin on the high priced stuff and if you asked what was new they always had some interesting and cool stuff back in the store room.

I appreciate your service and your son's service. It is your right to shop where you want, but gun shops must follow the law. If you were treated poorly by the clerks, then you should document the facts in a letter and send it to the company. If you don't like the law, you must join pro-gun organizations and write your elected officials to get the laws changed. I gather that you were indignant when your son's attempt at a purchase was turned down. That's somewhat understandable. Name calling does not help your case. You don't know these clerks...might be some veterans employed there.

I heard there was a Canadian company in negotiations to BUY sportsman's warehouse. I assumed there inventory was dwindleing based on not carrying inventory though that sale. ?

Occaisionally you find a bargain. I bought this WW2 Hi Standard model B-US military marked .22 training pistol for $300 in a Bass Pro Shop fine gun room.
