44 YEARS AGO TODAY
When Mt. Saint Hellens erupted. Blew up really. It was a huge blast. Miles of old growth Firs smashed like match sticks. One side of the mountain gone. IIRC 87 people killed. Ash flew around the world. A few days later it rained mud. If you ever get a chance to go there, do it. Makes you feel VERY small.

1980 Eruption of Mount St. Helens
On March 27, 1980, a series of volcanic explosions and pyroclastic flows began at Mount St. Helens in Skamania County, Washington, United States. A series of phreatic blasts occurred from the summit and escalated until a major explosive eruption took place on May 18, 1980, at 8:32 am. Wikipedia

Yep, and "only" 57 people were killed by the eruption. Me and my family were fishing, hundreds of miles from the mountain, and we heard it. We thought maybe they were blasting nearby. Didn't know till we got home what had happened. I rode my motorcycle to the visitors center about 20 years ago. It was impressive. Highly recommend a visit. My brother actually hiked and snowshoed to the rim of the crater and took some amazing photos that unfortunately seem to have been beamed into another dimension.
My buddy,at the time of the eruption, lived here in the suburbs of Portland. He could see the mountain from his bedroom window. He got a good view of it as it happened.
