Since moving to GA, I have yet to find a good deli in any market or as a sole proprietorship. Everybody sells Boars Head, and depending on where that is sourced, that may be of poor quality, as well as being overpriced.

The store brands that I have encountered are terrible. I recently got some store brand slicing pepperoni that tasted like it had been injected with dish detergent. Just got my refund from Boar's Head for terrible black forest ham.

So, I guess I am headed to peanut butter and jelly along with home made chicken salad.

I have one other thing I want to try. There are beautiful small hams in the meat dept for say 4.50 a pound. They have a good shelf life. I may thin slice my own. It is potentially much better than paying 12.00 a pound for Boar's Head

I guess the Northeast has spoiled me. Oh, and the water is terrible.

Our tap water is pretty abysmal but I finally got around to doing something about it. (Full disclosure-I still think it's nothing short of a miracle that "safe" water comes out of my house taps. Same for electricity at the flick of a switch.)

Finally installed a water softener (new appliances during a kitchen remodel so it made sense on several levels) and a reverse osmosis system. The RO unit feeds the fridge ice maker and water dispenser and splits to the laundry sink and a special faucet. The RO is pretty tasteless and won't replace "good tasting" water but it sure beats crummy tasting water.

Good luck with your adapting to very different circumstances! I feel your pain - we have pretty limited diversity of groceries as well.

That's exactly what I'm doing, at a mere $1.89 to $3.89/lb. boneless.
Boar's Head/Publix/Kroger can keep their $14.99/lb. ham until it rots.

Here in SW Missouri small hams run about $2.60 per pound.
Saw some at the local grocery store 2 days ago.

At the top of the “Doneatdat, it’llkillya!” list is “processed lunch meat.” Don’t matter Boarshead, Thuman, etc it’s loaded with enough chemicals to tan holsters. Cook up a chicken or a roast beef or a ham. Eat it until trash day when “Everything must go” and it’s still wildly more cost effective. Joe

I always like the Boarshead brand but my taste tend to run a little on the trashy side.

In regard to the water I lived in Hinesville, courtesy of Uncle Sam, back in the mid 80's.

The water always tasted and smelled funny, even when visiting Savannah. Kind of a swampy smell if you know what I mean.

Glad to hear things are still the same.

I bought a filter system from Pro One,which has helped a great deal with my well water. It is like a Birkey but half the cost and comes in a few different sizes. I have the 1 1/2 gallon one,hope this helps.

Have you looked for a Kosher delicatessen? You would think that in a city as large as Savannah there would be at least one decent Kosher deli.

I always liked deli ham. Nothing better than ham and Swiss on rye. However two things happened. One the price is gotten ridiculous and two the Dr told me that ham or any deli meat had far too much salt and I had to stay away from it. So can't afford it from a money wise and a health wise.

Lived in Washington state since the 70's and I still miss good Italian and Polish food.
Grew up in upstate NY with a lot of good Mom N Pop restaurants.

See if you can find a real, old fashioned, butcher shop.
Not one in the super market store that have a deli section, but ones that are on the edge of civilization and process their own products.
Also, ask them if they have a in with the local producers, can get naturally smoked/cured meats without all of todays chemicals and can the get any specialty products you may want.
If they say yes, you have found a gold mine.

I grew up on something called "boiled ham" for sliced deli meat. Very pink and virtually no fat. Maybe it's a MA thing, haven't found it anywhere else.

If there's a Whole foods near you they have very good sliced meat at their deli counter. The sliced roast beef is "for real" all beef and it's very good. It's also $19.00 a lb here in CA.

They also have a sugar free turkey breast they slice up - surprising how much better it tastes with nothing added. All turkey taste.

Down side is the stuff goes bad after the 2nd day.

Don't waste your time with their prepackaged stuff. No better than Boars Head or the Safeway stuff.

There is a BJ's Wholesale Club about 2.6 miles from me. They carry two plus brands on meats and cheeses That's where I been going for almost 2 years. I just googled it, there are 24 stores in Georgia. Happy tasting

Pete I assume you’ve tried Publix ? The ones we shop at in Naples Fl area have great selection, taste and price……….. if not there’s always good Oscar Mayer. Lol

Brunckhorst "Boars Head" brand was a local purveyor of deli meats in the Borough of Brooklyn, New York City and was family run. These were first/second generation Germans immigrants from the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. My mother's relatives worked for them in the 30/40's. What they are today bears no resemblance to the original but their products are still very in demand.You get what you pay for.

You want manky water, try Bakersfield, CA. I stayed in a hotel there and the water smelled of oil with a high sulphur content. At least in Beatty Nevada, it's just the sulphur from the volcanic strata.

Dietz & Watson lunch meat is my choice, a Philly staple since 1939. As the jingle says “The only thing as good as Dietz & Watson is Watson & Dietz”. They don’t make Lebanon Bologna however, so for that I rely on Seltzers.

When we moved out to the edge of Lancaster County 40+ years ago the lunch meat options were horrible compared to what you could find in any corner store in Philly. Nobody out here could figure out how to slice it correctly either. Lunch meat should be THINLY sliced, not a quarter inch thick. I won’t even go in to the bland stuff they passed off as a roll.

Lunch meat may not be the healthiest thing to eat, but you only live once. A life without lunch meat is no life at all.

Years ago when I was in military school one of the guys in my company was Jewish and from Chicago. His parents would send him a 10 lb salami. He would sell most of it to me for a couple bucks. I have been looking for salami as good as that for many years but never found its equal. Of course I haven’t found a kosher jewish deli.

I guess I am spoiled here in the midwest... lots of small town meat lockers & grocery stores that make their own deli meats... I head to Iowa for dried beef & braunsweiger... summer sausage & thuringer in Nebraska... ham & bologna on either side of the Missouri River... smoked brats, polish & bacon too... ya, kinda spoiled here...

Fried with over-medium eggs and grits! Yummm.

Lebanon, PA isn't too awful far from here. On New Year's Eve they drop a baloney at midnight.

I put in a whole house carbon filter system for like $1800. That didn't take care of the calcium deposits so we added a softener. Water is pretty good after that. Still doesnt compare to Western PA water .

As a lifelong southerner, 70 years and counting, it always amazes me that folks move down here then trash talk the south. We like it and seldom find anyone moving north. We just drink the water, eat our simple tasty food, gripe about the humidity and enjoy the relative lack of the white crud all winter.
Just learn to appreciate the experience.
Oh just get a stick of bologna LOL

Make up a big meatloaf.
Refrigerate the leftover loaf.
Slice down for sandwiches.
The best cold sandwich there is!

but i know what you mean about lousy deli meat, if you only knew how much water you were buying infused into the meat.

I've been getting into capicola ham. It is originally Italian and similar to prosciutto, but it also kinda reminds me of Virginia country ham. Need to slice it very thin It is pretty salty.

Only thing I don't like about it is that it is $18 a pound at my local supermarket.

I’ve wanted to try Lebanon Bologna but never have.

I like Boars Head meats but with the increased prices for all red meat I've since gone the route of chicken and pork.

Just finished off a pork roast. Might not be the best way but I cooked it in the oven to get a nice crust and then little over an hour in a crockpot on low. Shredded pork on a Kaiser roll topped with provolone cheese and horseradish is very satisfying.

Around the holidays when I was working a spiral ham kept me in sandwiches for a week. It was a $1.99/lb back then. Slap it on a 6" hoagie roll with mayo,lettuce,onion and tomato and I'm one happy camper.

And then we have chicken. I don't mess with a whole chicken but will get family packs of thighs,breasts or drumsticks and vacuum seal everything. I like chicken salad with mayo,diced onion and chopped jalapenos wrapped up in a 12" tortilla.

Any or all of the above with a cold beer and all that's left is picking a comfy place to nap.

I always pick up some of the thin sliced clearance priced packages.

SWMBO has informed me that "fur-ball" loves it, and it is cheaper than dog food.

With all the cemicals and "Stuuff" in the packaged meats, today,

is one reason that I went on a Cheese kick.

A chunk of cheese and some fruit makes a great snack.

I find Boards head $$$ and bland at best.
Most quality meats are not found at Walmart, Albetsons, Safeway etc. stores, in my area.

Quality stuff is only found at the "Blue Ribbon" deli or family meat shops.

I got some really good off the bone ham today at Albertson's. What really messes with me is we can't get any good rye bread out here in flyover country. Hell we can hardly find even poor Rye. We went to the candy store(my wife's name for the discount grocery store) and we found some exc bacon...even there it wasn't cheap...2 dollars for 12 ounces. It is excellent and makes great BLTs that would be better with good rye. Back east we quite often bought one called Beefsteak soft Rye. a mild seedless rye.

I wait until Thanksgiving or Christmas to buy ham or turkey. Prices get stupid low then as they are trying to attract you to buy the more expensive stuff. I load up during the sales and eat them year round, usually smoked.
