Default VFW poppies

Went to the store and they had the local VFW out front with the poppies. $10 in the jar and I have a poppy. Walking out of the store I say to the veteran manning the poppy booth, "Have a nice day!" He replied with, "The weather ain't too bad." I told him it was pretty good duty. "Yeah. I've had a lot worse."

I wasn't sure anybody was still carrying on this tradition. I haven't seen this being done in years.
As I mentioned in another thread, I can remember being in grade school (late 1960's) and someone from the local American Legion coming into our class on the Friday before Memorial Day and handing out the paper poppies. I can distinctly remember them going through a speech about what the poppy represented and then we were expected to wear our poppies throughout the remainder of the day and then take them home. I'm sure that kind of history lesson, in our schools today, could not be tolerated.

I just ran into the local Vietnam Veterans at the grocery story. They had similar flowers in the colors of the Vietnam service ribbon.

A wonderful tradition, I happened to be in New Zealand in 2018 and visited the Army museum in Waiouru on the cusp of Remembrance Day corresponding to the end of WW1 on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month when hostilities ended and took these pictures there including a terrible picture of a huge Poppy display inside the museum. NZ was festooned with Poppies.

In Flanders Fields
BY JOHN MCCRAE

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

My step mother was president / past President of the Local VFW women's auxiliary. She made sure I always got a poppy. She had been gone a while now but whenever I see the poppies I think of her.

Our cat found a paper poppy we had brought home. I took what was left outside and gave it a proper sendoff by fire, like old flags are treated!-

Still see the American Legion guys selling poppies in front of stores around here. I always make a donation and get one. My dad was very active in the Legion (Post Commander for years) and mom was active in the ladies auxiliary.
