Cameron Yaste was the Commander of the USS John McCain, a Destroyer stationed in the Middle East. The Navy recently relieved him of command and cited a "lack of confidence" after this photo went viral.

I'm sure he didn't mount the scope himself, but Geez Louise! You'd think someone in charge of a War Ship would notice that something was horribly wrong!

I was on a US Destroyer during my service,, USS Hawkins DD873 ( Around 1972 )
Our Commander would never have been seen shooting a gun,,
I was part of a "boarding party", so I got to shoot the hand held guns.
I do not think I ever saw any officer shoot a gun,,

Even at that, the scope would not have been backward,
The ONLY hand held guns ever fired off our ship was a 1911 and a Thompson machine gun,,
SO,, NO SCOPE!!

There must be more to the story. Who mounted the scope backwards and who took and published the pic? The Captain didn’t notice the lack of magnification when he looked through the scope? Strangest reason I’ve ever heard of for being relieved of command...

Strangest reason I’ve ever heard of for being relieved of command...

I think EVERY time I have heard of a Commander being relieved,,
it has been for this exact reason,,
embarrassment,,

If the ship is seen doing something out of place, that other services can ridicule,,
he is GONE!!

..I'm guessing the people who mounted that scope and took the picture had it in for him.
That explanation makes the most sense to me. It's an odd story, for sure.

(Maybe they had it in for him for a reason. Maybe, after the photo, the Navy became aware of the reasons and removed him from the ship. Maybe. I dunno, of course.)

More:

...He previously served aboard the destroyer USS Hopper, and amphibious landing ship USS Bataan and as the McCain’s executive officer prior to taking command.

In August 2017, the ship collided with a Liberian-flagged tanker off the coast of Singapore near the Strait of Malacca. Ten sailors were killed and the crew fought for days to keep the ship afloat as it limped to port. The entire leadership team on the ship was fired in the aftermath, and the captain was fined by the Navy after taking responsibility...

What is SECOND Image in the air?

Easy to identify the ejected cartridge.

There is a second image of "something" else.

Whats up - everything that's not down.
