On this date in 1970, the worst sports tragedy in American history occurred. 75, including all players of Marshall University’s football team, were killed in an airplane crash in Huntington WV.
I was at a fraternity party that night when someone turned on the television, which was reporting on the accident. Having grown up just a few miles from there, I knew there was a good chance I knew someone on that flight.
I lived in Columbus, Ohio which is 100-120 miles away, many of our High Schools had grads on that plane! It was a sad day for the entire MAC region! Basically left a hole that took 20 years to quit hurting.
I remember that day. I was a sophomore at a local college in my city, Charleston. Many in my area were Marshall fans, because it was close by, and many of the grads of the local schools went there. Everyone hurt for years after it happened. The film, "We Are Marshall," is actually a very good story of the rebuilding of the team and the spirit of the school.
