A Steller's sea eagle has taken up residence in Terra Nova National Park [Newfoundland], and officials say it is the only known bird of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.

Normally found in Russia, Japan and along the Korean Peninsula, the Steller's sea eagle is one of the largest birds of prey on Earth, with a wingspan of about 2.4 metres. [~7.5']

I heard everything was leaving Russia like drones. May he find a mate and live in peace. 7.5' wingspan. A female bald eagle wingspan is 7.2'. Thanks for sharing.

For those on Facebook (not me; my gf found it) here is a link. Apparently it has been around for a while and they've been seen off and on over the years, but very rarely. Only ~5000 known. Must have flown across the Canadian arctic from the Kamchatka peninsula. Going to be hard to find a mate but I hope it does.

This is just up the road from me.

World's largest congregation of eagles begins in the Fraser Valley

About 35,000 eagles gather in the lower Fraser Valley between November and February

Sadly the annual festival has been cancelled this year after 25 years
“The popularity of the event brought thousands of people to Harrison Mills, too many at one time to be sustainable,” explained Jo-Anne Chadwick, president of the society.

She said the group “was dedicated to protecting the area and having so many people arrive over a two-day weekend was having the opposite effect.”

Over the North Pole to Greenland is about 1500 miles. It is another 1300 mile trip to get from Greenland to Newfoundland. A rare bird indeed!

My mother once had to go into the hospital, where she worked as a nurse, to have a deep scratch on her hand cleaned and dressed. They asked her why she came in instead of taking care of it herself. She told them it was likely a very dirty scratch as it was from a Golden Eagle talon. "How did you get scratched by an eagle?" "I was reaching in the freezer for a package of steaks and caught my hand on it as I was taking it out of the freezer."

Having a father who was a game warden led to some pretty strange situations.:D

I bet he would have fun with the NJ drones...if they really exist.
