Tis that time of the season....again......Snakes that is.
This past Sunday a fellow about 20 miles from me got nailed pretty good while hunting turkey by a nice sized Timber rattler. I have killed three so far plus a copperhead on my property. Needless to say with my little furkids in a fenced yard day or night, I am mighty paranoid. I have already lost one doxie to a Timber rattler, and that same doxie was bitten 2 x one day, and survived only to get bitten 2x again about a amonth or so later. Only thing that saved him was we were around to get him medical treatment. The last time we were unaware. Had anaother doxie who also was bitten 2x but we were there to get her medical help and she too made it. I have a serious snake problem at my place, through no fault of my own. My land is sandy soil, has a large swamp in the back 40, a pond, and a stream that goes through it. Lots of food, such as squirrels and birds. I do shoot squirrels all year around just to keep the population down, and hopefully push the snakes elsewhere for food. Anyone else have a snake problem or any ideas on how to deal with it. The so called snake repellents are a joke as is sulphur. I do not have any trash piles or junk laying around that may attract them either, its just an ideal habitat for them, and as much as I try to make it unpleasant for them it just does not help.

This kind of season is when u start walking the property or riding the property on or in 4x4 and look for the snakes and take them out with a little .22LR for practice. I was out a few weeks ago at our hunting property making my rounds with the 15-22. Those darn water moccasins were out in full force since we have finally had a few warm snaps down here in Louisiana.
I took a few fatty ones while i was at it. Some that werent long, but they sure were thick. I'd hate to be hit by one of them, thats for sure.

Our hunting cabin has loads of rattlers. Here in PA you now have to buy a license to kill 1.
Just one, what a joke!

I have two (had three) outside cats. Theyb do help with keeping any field mice etc down. The big Tom we had was only about 3 years of age, and was found lying on the porch dead one morning. I did not check him over for any snake bites, but its a possibility, as there is nothing else around here that would have killed him and not left a mark, and he was not known to wonder off.

foxeye, if you have skinks around where you live, they are quite poisonous to cats. One of mine ate a skink and it's lucky we saw him in time. Took him to to the vet and got him a shot but he was never quite the same after that.
