The use of Quick Response (QR) codes exploded in the last four years and remain a popular alternative for menus, retail stores, and other establishments. Naturally, this means that bad actors take the opportunity to exploit this mobile technology to launch attacks. While there may be QR code vulnerabilities in other platforms, for those using social media please be advised that cyber criminals are adding malicious QR codes in chats to prompt users to scan the code. If scanned, the unwitting user gives the hacker full access to their accounts.

Being a tech dummy, like myself, I find it easy to avoid all these scams people post about.
same here ,I dont use the QR codes .unless i have too .went to Walmart to get oil filters for my truck. They did not have the book with the oil filter numbers for each engine like they always have had since I was a kid in the 70's .Told the clerk no book .He pointed at QR code sign above the filters .he said just use that with your phone ..I went to advance auto .I not doing that expeately for stores and fast food joints i have seen .What do they think people without phones will do?

Many fast food and burger joints are using QR codes to order your food. Same for the TV commercials that pop them up; often with a FREE! offer.

They are unlikely to be scams, but are still dropping trackers into your phone.

Don't scan them.

Down at my local Cabela's, You have to use one to get waited on at the Gun Counter.
Kind of looks like the old school ink blot!

Well that would be the last time I went to that place, as I do not carry a cellphone. Always figured some pocket cash and a couple credit cards were good enough.

Same thing for a food place as another poster alluded to!

Everybody under about 50 nowadays, in the United States, carries a phone with them at all times. So they rather stupidly imagine that everyone in the world must carry a phone at all times.

Where it REALLY annoys me is with Medicare insurance providers, as well as the medicare.gov website. Us older folks are the ones most likely NOT to have a smart-phone, yet they practically require one to use their systems.

STUPID!!!

Being a photographer, the camera alone is enough for me to carry a Smartphone.
I could write a book on the pics I missed because no camera!
Such as - there is/was a AN-2 down the nearby Belen, NM Airport.
The only one I ever saw!
No camera, no pic!

When I asked the guys at my local if I need it to get service, they took my name and number and called me when it was my turn. I don't do QR. Wouldn't know how.

P.S. Still bought a gun, by the way.

When we were in Chile and Argentina a couple of years ago that was the only way to get a menu in many eateries. The prices and availabilty of the food changed often enough that it wasn't worth printing menus.

That was a pain for the ones that didn't plan on having an active cell plan down there. I never was aware of any trackers attached, even when we went to the same place on three different occasions.

I'm no techie , but I'm smart enough to know that you have no idea what you are downloading . There is almost always a work around .

Logan is our resident QR Whisperer. He uses the reader on his phone to our great advantage.

He says you have to be smart enough to scan a code from a reputable company and avoid those such as "Honest Abe's Mausoleum Time Shares".

My cigar buddy with one of the "alphabet" agencies warned us months ago not to scan any QR codes anywhere. I never do anyway, I'm that guy that makes the waiter bring me a printed menu, even back during Covid.

Well that was interesting! Your reference of an Antonov AN-2 kicked off a memory in my brain's archives and I went searching through my photos. I was pretty sure I had seen one in Seattle at the Museum of Flight's Restoration Center (actually in Everett, at least in September 2007 when I was there). Here is the plane that I saw. Full disclosure - I did not take the pictures with a cellphone, but I did have my Panasonic FZ30 digital camera with me!

I wear a glucose sensor patch on my arm that transmits levels continuously to a Dexcom app on my phone. When I replace the patch after 10 days I scan the QR code on the applicator as each one has a different electronic identifier to handshake with my phone.

The app gives me alerts and warnings if my levels climb or drop out of safe ranges.

Try that with a flip phone.

Will it work with an old Western Electric dial phone?
