New Mexico governor mobilizes National Guard to tackle crime emergency in Albuquerque

New Mexico governor mobilizes National Guard to tackle crime emergency in Albuquerque | AP News

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in New Mexico’s largest city, saying that a significant increase in crime in Albuquerque warrants the help of the New Mexico National Guard.

She signed an executive order, clearing the way for several dozen troops to be deployed along the historic Route 66 corridor starting in mid-May. The order also frees up state funds for the National Guard to use as part of the effort.

Training for 60 to 70 troops already is underway, the governor’s office said.

Even if more people get arrested, with bail reform, they will get released before the paperwork is done.

It's an election year for the mayor, Little Timmy.

BTW Pres Trump sent the Feds to help out in 2020, both the governor and Little Timmy were crying about "military tactics". Oh the irony.

Oh, and the governor sent her praetorian guard, the NMSP, to patrol the streets a couple three years ago.

She made her bed. Problem is the whole city has to lye in it.

I drive I40 about once a year to visit relatives in AZ & CA. My step-son warned me long ago, Never stay in Albuquerque, the "armpit of the southwest"

Worse, Gallup is an old native American word meaning "panhandler central". What little I've seen of Tucumcari doesn't fill me with deep joy, either.

This is just an election year dog and pony show to help Little Timmy get re-elected for a third term.

Well, we can thank goodness that none of the National Guard folks will have weapons, none will wear uniforms, no military vehicles will be allowed. Sounds like about 6 dozen paid tourists will be helping out with traffic control, maybe doing a few photo ops to demonstrate how much the Gov truly cares, probably right up to the day after the election polls close. With a typical 40-hour weekly schedule that will work out to about a dozen on duty at any given time of day (assuming no one calls off sick or has some personal emergency to take care of).

What can possibly go wrong with this? We'll just have to wait and see how the gangbangers and street thugs react to such an intrusion on their home turf.

Then what’s the purpose?

It was a nice place when I was stationed there in the 80s

It's sad to read things like this.

I seriously considered moving there in 1992. Darn shame what's happened to it, although it was bound to happen. Historically New Mexico has been far too lenient in sentencing for violent crimes.

Ah, Gallup. Home of Garden Deluxe. I once had a near total nervous breakdown trying to change wiper blades in a blizzard in the K-Mart parking lot there.

I doubt if anything will change on the streets. Anyone arrested will be out before all the paperwork is done - as usual.

Symbolism over substance.

Paraphrasing Governor Michelle, "they're not going to be in camis, they're not going to look like police", IOW, they'll be riding and walking around as targets while Timmy and Michelle get points for pretending to try.
Been there, done that, as a DC Guard MP, until TPTB learned better.
The mayor and governor should be saying "The Guard will be sworn as special police with arrest powers. Break the law and they will hook you up and send you to jail for arraignment."
