Naval Air Reserve, 1969-1975. I think I partially qualify. Regular duty always looked down on us 'weekend warriors'.

Not anymore. Almost half the troops in theater right now are either Reserve or National Guard

U.S. Air Force 2003 - 2008. Aerial Gunner. Sr. Airman (E-4)
Served in (over, rather) Iraq and Afghanistan in one of these bad boys. (see attached photo)
Got discharged because of complications after a head injury. Just got cleared for re-enlistment.
I'm attending school in the fall to use my GI Bill.... but I'm going into the AF Reserve as soon as possible also. Doing something fun like in flight re-fueling.

US Army 1967-1971, 11B, 12B, discharged as an E-5. ROTC in college, USAR and National Guard 1976-1998, retired as an LTC.
Regarding the Reserves and National Guard in the 1960s, I recall hearing an instructor in BRMC in BCT refering to them as "legalized draft dodgers". I do remember that when I started BCT I read a news story that said the Pentagon said Vietnam veterans no longer had to serve in the active reserves, they could go right into the IRR.

Did my time in the Army Security Agency 1969 thru 1972. Served as Communications Traffic Analyst/Cryptanalyst. Spent 18 months in Turkey spying on the Ruskies, the last 15 months at Homestead AFB, spying n the Ruskies in Cuba. I think you will find a very high number of vets on this forum.

U.S. Army: June 30, 1969 - December 29, 1971
Fort Ord, CA - Basic
Fort Gordon, GA - Signal School
MACV, RVN - 1st Signal Brigade
Presidio of San Francisco, CA - San Francisco Signal Team -Attached to Army Air Defense Command (ARADOM) and assigned to the Joint Communication Center, Mill Valley Air Force Station (MVAFS) on Mount Tamalpais, Marin County, CA. Most importantly, the mess hall was run by the Air Force - gooooood chow!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mill_Va..._Force_Station
If you follow the link above, I worked in the building under the dome in the photo entitled "SAGE search radar." If you scroll down to the photo of the "Station support area," you will note the facility is above the fog/low clouds. More days than not we would be sitting in the sun while The City (S.F.) would be socked in by fog. My view of the Bay on a clear day was unbelieveable! Great duty station . . .

Two branches here. Started in the Marine Reserve as a Air Control Electronics Operator and tried to go AD but that didn't work so I went AD in the Air Force. Started in Supply and cross trained into ICBMs at the first chance. Retired after 22 years.

U.S.Navy 1959-1978 retired on 20 in 1978. Musician 1st Class.
3 tours of sea duty, USS Coral Sea, USS Yorktown and USS J.F. Kennedy.
3 years ashore in Yokosuka, Japan. Stateside in Corpus Christi Texas, Seattle, WA (twice) and Norfolk/Little Creek Va. Boot camp in San Diego and A school in Washington D.C.
Just had a 50 year reunion with members of my first unit. 10 out of 16 attended. What a hoot! It was like it was just last year we were together instead of almost 50 years ago.

USAF Firefighter 83-03
4 trips to the sandbox, a few other locations . Never saw combat, we dealt with aftermath, sometimes combat related, most times human error. Worked with all of our branches in various joint taskforces, Marine ARFF's ROCK!! They were some of the best troops I've had the honor to lead.

"...Transportation Corps."
Does the Army still teach how to run a steam locomotive? I was at Ft Eustis VA back in the '70s for a North-South Skirmish and saw a steam train there.

Primary MOS 63B20 Wheel Vehicle Mechanic. But I spent alot of my time working on tracked vehicles too as my unit had both.
Secondary MOS 63F20 Recovery Specialist. Basicly a wrecker operator. Only my wrecker weighed 27 tons and ran on tracks.

U.S. Air Force 1959-1963 - Weather Observer. Nothing too exciting except this was during the Bay of Pigs situation and I was stationed in England. We were sure we were going to get hit first by Russia just before they attacked the United States. Pretty tense times..

USAR AD 2 yr 7 mo 18 D (From my DD 214)
NOB Norfolk, then Ft Monroe Va 1973-1976
Best vacation I have ever had.. On the NOB, on the telephone, I was Capt, but when I showed up as an Army Cpt, they were not amused.. seems a Navy Capt is one step below the divine being of ADM. Heady stuff for a 25 yr old.
A navy friend said the ideal job in the Navy was the responsibility of a seaman, pay of an Admiral and the freedom of a Chief..

Ah, it looks like President Nixon let you leave RVN 30 days early, too. It also looks like I was running about month behind you. I arrived in country at Camron Bay on my way to Da Nang, but "the needs of the Army changed" so my orders were changed sending me instead to the 160th Group in Long Binh by way of Bien Hoa Air Base. Once the guys at 160th saw my MOS was 72B20, they said, "Hey buddy, you want to go to Saigon?" I thought, wow the Paris of the East . . . "Yeah, sounds good." Well, it wasn't Paris, but it sure beat the heck out of working a communications trailer in the field outside of Rocket City . . .

USAF 1972 - 1992, MSgt., Munitions Maintenance Technician. Three years in Thailand, where I met and married by wonderful wife, a short time at Holloman AFB,NM, 8 years in Europe, Holland and Germany with about two years of that time spent in Denmark, Kirtland AFB,NM, Hill AFB, UT, Carswell AFB, TX, MacDill AFB, FL, which is where I retired. A short stint in Desert Storm in 1990. Had to leave early as my Mother was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. I returned to TX. for about a week and the Air Force gave me a humanitarian reassignment to Florida so I could be closer to mom for her few remaining months. Out of all the places I visited I do believe Denmark is the MOST pro American. While I was there I attended a Fourth of July celebration in the city of Alborg. Keep in mind the 4th is not any thing special to Denmark other than their support of the US. There were approximately 250,000 people at this celebration. If you went into a bar or club, when it was discovered you were US military, your money was no good. Everyone was buying you drinks or food. Loved the Danes!!
