Yeah, I thought geese were smarter than that. I have just one word of advice: "Serpentine!"

They have run all the ducks from out pond. I was thinking about restocking them, but I'm not sure they would last long.

So true.
The correct name is Canada Goose ( Branta canadensis).
Great photo!

I asked for their ID and it said 'Canadian Goose'. The picture did look like it had been pasted on, though.

Many enjoy the sight of a lot of honkers, however Here in Reno
there are a lot of us that wish they would stay out of the "Hood"
since they make for a "******" game of golf on the fairways and mostly, the greens !!

Well it's Reno, after all. They roll the dice, but they always throw a 2, 3, or 12.

At least, they don’t walk down the middle of the road and give you a nasty look, like they do here. In 30+ years working for the postal service out in the country, the dogs never bothered me, but those damn geese…….

After 45 years of hunting them...35 as a guide I can say they are just OK for eating..I put about 15 in the pond at home. A couple would eat grain out of my wife's hand...We had 2-4 thousand stay all winter. Eating?? Now a duck esp woody teal pintail baldpate and couple others that don't cheat and eat fish there is nothing better for eating...well a good quail ruffed grouse or Hun partridge. But they are white meat. Pheasant? Just a fast running slow flying tough chicken. Sometimes those ole Canada geese(yes the right name) can be pretty smart...and I'll bet they do make a mess of a golf course...their white brethren, snow geese, destroy winter wheat fields...a 220 swift over the heads of about 5000 make a pretty sight leaving a field.

I like dove and grouse, but never got a taste for waterfowl. My dad however, loved duck and goose.

The photo makes me chuckle. You'd think by now they know it's quicker to fly than take the train.

My little town just happens to be along their migration path. They absolutely love the ponds in our various city parks. But they're also a lot of trouble. Those things are just plain mean! That's a big bird. They've been known to chase and bite people. Plus they poop all over the place.
The Parks Dept has tried putting fake alligators in the water and coyote cut-outs near the shore. But the geese just ignore 'em.

I took a gander at the pic. The French Canadians call them "foie gras".

They hung out near the building entrance where I used to work. Yes indeed, they are aggressive birds. They'd confront you as you came by; particularly if they had hatchlings. The best thing to do was crouch down, spread and flap your arms, yell and charge at them. In short, be a bigger goose. They'd turn tail and run away. It always worked, but like the car-chasing dog, I don't know what I'd have done if I caught one.

The problem went from over hunting to too much protection. Several generations of them got comfortable hanging out in the farm ponds and such around here and made it their permanent homes - in short they've lost the instinct to migrate and make themselves a nasty nuisance year round. Against the law to kill or "harass" them. Tree hugging neighbors who live hundreds of yards away think it's cute to feed them, but since my place is in close proximity to the pond they eventually always want to use my yard and driveway as a depository for their offal. I could appreciate them from afar but have come to despise the nasty varmints. Never cared for the meat the few times I had it. I view them simply as **** (rhymes with 'bird') farmers.

Just remember, it is a felony to molest a duck - and if convicted, the other inmates won't talk to you.

...of geese at the Marina downtown. They would hang out in the parking lot and the male was VERY protective of the female so that whenever you got out of your car, if you didn't mosey right along he would come and give you a threat display. I was experimenting with him one time and just eyeballed him and didn't give any reaction. He quit the display but looked ticked off. I was only worried that his head was at the right height to give me a bite between the legs.
