Default Best Advice You Never Took

I worked with a doctor that did not care for his mother-in-law. He told me to marry an orphan. My wife and I will have been married for 30 years this December 17th. I frequently think about the wisdom of his advice. I love my wife very much and she is my best friend. I actually get along with my mother-in-law, but there have been times!

Learn to play the piano. I was offered cheap lessons when I was 11 but decided that playing soccer on the village green was more fun. Sad thing is I was never more than a mediocre soccer player at best.

People told me not to marry my first wife, but I did anyway. She was born on April 1st, April Fools Day, that ought to tell you something. I'm sure her mom and dad expected a normal person, April Fool!

I get along fine with my mother in law and my wifes side of the family an my wife gets along fine with my Mom. It's the rest of my family that's the problem. They never came out and said it but I think they don't like the idea of me, a dark skinned American Indian, marrying a white chick.

My father told me never to let my wants become needs. Well, we're three years into our ten year "Get Out of Debt" plan and we're finding if more painful than if we had just not incurred the debt af all.

Around 1975 I was told to buy Gold by a fellow that knew his stuff.
Instead I partied my money away.
Now, instead of being rich, I have a bulletproof liver and lack of brain cells.
Ahh well.

My FIL passed away two years after we were married. My MIL passed away the following year. That was 28 years ago so I can honestly say my inlaws have been petty easy to get along with.

"Don't pick up them cigarettes, Son. You'll play Hell getting off them."

I am quit for my second time. The first time I quit lasted almost 6 years (after smoking for a solid 20 years) and in a weak moment I had "just 1." HAH! I took up where I left off and it was another 13 years to gain the courage to quit again. Off them going on 4 years this time, but I know I'll never be able to relax my vigilance.

I'd have to say my Dad's wisdom as well telling me not to start smoking. Again when he was dying of lung cancer he told me to quit.
I'm on my probably 10th quit now and still want to smoke.

Back in the late 60's I worked with an "old timer" that was probably in his mid to late fifties but seemed ancient to a teenager like myself at the time. We were sitting around a huge wood stove that was large enough to throw an entire wooden pallet into, drying off after working out in the snowy cold on a large government supply depot. We were talking about money and investments, this old boy spoke up and said "Boys, if you want some good advice...save your silver...all of it." Back then silver was about a buck an ounce, you could still get change in silver dollars in Montana, my dad hated it because the heavy silver wore holes in your pockets. We all laughed at the time, what the hell would we want to save our silver quarters, halves and dollars for. I didn't catch onto his wisdom until the mid to late 70's and ended up chasing the silver market to the top, had I followed his advice back in the 60's I could have made a considerable profit...The same could have been true with alot of stuff you could have invested in back in the 60's quite cheap compared to today...the old hindsight routine. Still today in the precious metals market I have friends that buy gold and silver whenever they have a chance at whatever price the spot is currently sitting at or slightly below, they don't care if the market fluctuates the spot price down where it currently is. One friend of mine buys gold whenever he has an "excess" profit in his business, doesn't care where the price is, puts in his order and waits for delivery, hes a wealthy guy today because of this practice...in fact he's been a wealthy guy for as long as I've known him, but all he's truly interested in is gold and silver, its his life.

My Mother & Father gave me ton's of good advice over the years that I was too stupid & stubborn to take. I didn't realize or respect the value that the experience of some one that had been there before, was worth. A few years back, I told them "You were right all those times;I was wrong. How I wish I had listened to you!"

It ain't what you save on a bargain, it's what you don't spend in the first place that makes you rich.

Best advice I never took? Anything my stepfather ever said. I ignored his "sage wisdom" and have been better off for it every day of my life. Thats the truth.

"Buy low and sell high."

I never seem to have quite gotten the hang of this, but it's still good advice.

It sounds so simple.

My Dad did not take the advice our family Dr.
left.

On his Rx pad he wrote: " Martin, pregnancy test is positive, commit suicide tomorrow, I'll be out of town."

This was in 1955, I'm the oldest of five. Youngest sister Mary at that "oops" announcement. I retain the document.

To the OP point: I dated my wife for 11 years while we cared for and watched our parents die. Her father, her mother, my father, my mother.

We had made a lot of plans that got setback by the circumstances.

Our son Ty never knew a Grandparent.

38 years together now with a GREAT son.

Life happens.

I'm reminded of W.C. Fields' comment:

"Ah yezzz. My first wife. She drove me to drink. I don't think I ever thanked her adequately for that...

When Fields was in a hospital and approaching death a friend walked into his room and found him reading a Bible. When the friend asked what he was doing, Fields said, "Looking for loopholes."

My ex-wife's grandfather told me that you ought to check a woman's teeth like a horse before you got hitched. I'd already spent too many dollars on her dentist bills by that time and much heartache to come.
Wise man but advice a little late in coming.

Gold when it was deregulated in the 1970's. About $250 if I remember right then ran up to like $1800-$1900 range. 800% profit in 4-5 years?

My Mother-in-Law was (next to my mom) the finest woman I have
ever met. She hugged me the very first time we met, and every
time after that. In 30+ years we never had a cross word between
us. I miss her.

Make all of your mistakes in your first professional job. Once you make enough mistakes get another professional job and don't make those same mistakes. Folks will consider you brilliant.

Coming up on 25 years on my first professional job. Maybe it is time for a change?

Thumbs up

From my Dad: "Stay in school, so you can work with your brain and not your back." He lived through the depression, served in WWII, and was all around a good man and father. Took me a while to realize he was pretty smart too...

The only advice I ever got was from my grandpa "Matthew be friends with a young lady before you start dating her." That piece of advice has served me very well through the years
