Default Weird Big Five Mauser. Any Idea What This Is?

My dad bought a well used BRNO Chech Mauser at Big Five Sporting Goods. It's a pretty beat looking military gun. Looks like a 98 the krauts carried. Anyway, this thing isn't 8MM. It's a much bigger bore. Like one of those great European 9MM maybe. And the shell carrier has been modified so the bolt closes after the last shot. Do you think some one sporterized the inside of this gun leaving it look military on the outside? Then it got mixed up with the other imports? What do you think?

Have you slugged the bore or are you just looking at the muzzle?

Disassemble?! My house is over some kind of magnetic vortex where if I drop a screw or somethin' it rolls away way farther than the normal laws of physics allow. Just picture a normal Mauser with four sling swivels and when you open the bolt and look at the carrier it has a polished angle to allow the bolt to close. And a big bore. Using the super scientific method of sticking a 9mm Luger in the muzzle I came to the conclusion it's 9MM.

I've never been to Alabama but I did stay at a Holiday INN last night.

Drive a pure lead slug all the way through the bore and mike it.
I suspect that the muzzle may just be eroded out from a lot of shooting and poor cleaning rod discipline.

Could it just be counterbored at the muzzle for a couple of inches down to repair a worn original bore at the muzzle? Very commonly done to recycle military rifles to avoid rebarreling. Easy to see the 'step' from the new counterbore to the old bore diameter looking in from the muzzle end.

It would be a neat find if it was in one of the 9mm cals or even 9.3mm's.

You are correct!! Looking down the muzzle I see it has no rifling for 3/4" or so, and there it is. The counterbored step. Sure wish it was a 9MM, though. Leave it to S&W fans to solve a Mauser mystery. Thanks!

A VZ24 has four sling swivels. Does it have a scrubbed crest (common with VZ24's)?
