Default Tulle'

Thinking of doing a little Crow hunting this week. I have hunted all manners of beasts with black powder, but never Crows.

One of me favorite Partridge guns from this past season was this Fusil de Chase in .54 Smoothbore. That would be equal to a modern 28 gauge. These French guns made their way to New England in the early to late 18th century. Popular hunting guns for the working class. I would imagine quite a few of these were used as Militia guns...

Fusil de Chasse, Tulle..... in a .54 Smoothbore.... 28 gauge...

Were the smooth bores used interchangeably for slugs (ball) and shot?

Ron,

Yes... You could patch a ball and use it as a hunting gun or load with shot and it made a excellent upland game gun.... sometimes called a fowler.

I have done exactly that with a rock lock. If you go on a cold morning, southside... The birds huddle. But they don' t break all at once.....do not move and reload...

There might be six in a covey, and they break one ant two at a time....

Well,...

All this talkin' made me get her out of hiding. Heading to the range in a few minutes with a bunch of different powders, some .530 ball, and different thickness patch. Need to spend some time figuring what she likes best. Have a Smoothbore shoot coming up in October, so I need the practice.

So, range report...

Need thicker patches. The bore is a little loose at .540. Another five thousands of patch will be a group tightener. All 5 shots on a 9 " paper plate, pulled fast at 50 yards.

I am well pleased.

Tulle is still in existence, although I don't think they manufacture weapons now. Their last was the MAT 49 smg, a big, sturdy brute with enough mass to stand up to the hot French 9mm loads. It had a sliding wire stock, sorta like a grease gun, and a fixed magazine that folded towards the front, making the whole thing pretty compact when folded up.

In 1960 I was in Paris, on two weeks leave from Thule, Greenland. One evening I was out for a walk on the Ile de la Cité; I passed about three gendarmes spaced about 50 yards apart, with MAT 49s at high port. Then I looked around and saw the whole street, for as far as I could see, was lined with them. I think that Charles de Gaulle was passing that way that evening, and he was not universally loved in France. I chose another street to walk on.

Tulle and the two other main French arsenals: St Etienne and Ch*tellerault wer set up after the war of 1870, when France realized the arsenals near the border, although close to the iron and coal of the Ruhr, were in a very exposed position.
