Default Something that you always wanted to do with a gun

Has there anything that you ever wanted to do with a gun (legally)?

For me, I think it would be cool to take a whitetail deer with a Triple Lock revolver or a flintlock Kentucky Rifle. Taking a ruffed grouse with a muzzleloading side by side percussion shotgun is up there too.

Since I just broke 25 straight for the first time in competition I have that accomplished, now to shoot 100 straight in Sporting Clays. That may be awhile.

I don't know. Shoot a sasquatch? I'd flip a coin to decide rug or coat from the pelt.

Used to want to go African cat hunting with a pistol. I think I'm a bit smarter now!?! I'd like to get a chance to touch off an artillery piece, or bazooka on a military range. Guess I should have joined up when I was younger.

Hunt antelope.
My dad made a trip west when I was a Junior in high school. I convinced him to take my Browning BAR .30-06 with the scope instead of his sporterized 1898 Mauser 8mm with iron sights. He brought back an antelope buck and a mule deer doe.

I didn't get to go and have never been able to arrange a trip.
We did hunt mule deer in Utah together many years ago. Got none but had fun.

XXXXXXXXXXXX

I've got an old 410 double barrel and an old 410 single shot pistol that my grandfather gave me. I'd love to shake a "squirrel vine" and watch him shoot just one more time. He would have been 111 last July.

Okay - it ain't legal of course; but I've always had this fantasy of being turned loose in a grocery store with a pump 12 gauge and a shopping cart full of ammo. I think about it every time I'm in the local mega mart. All those cans, bottles and wheels of cheese - just mocking me! Oh yeah! The cheese - it gets it first!

Go on an African safari with my .375H&H Winchester 70.

Scientific research, buy several watermellons and see which load out of which gun has the biggest explosive effect. Call it the Gallagher Project.

Well, there was this action pistol competition once . . .

They had a special match as part of the stages . . . winner takes the pot. I was just mediocre that day in limited class with my Colt Combat Elite but had my eye on the special match at the end.

RULES:

Name: "Bill Clinton Match" . . . for when the buzzer started you were sitting at a table, with your handgun inside a pistol case . . . UNLOADED, just like Bill would prefer (hence the title)!

SCENARIO . . .
At the buzzer, you uncased it, ran about ten feet to the box, loaded, and shot EIGHTEEN steel targets (plates and poppers) spread out in a wide "V" in front of you at various distances (10-35 yards).

RULES . . .

1. Fastest to drop all eighteen wins ALL the money!

2. ONE MANDITORY RELOAD REQUIRED.

3. ANY iron-sighted handgun . . . so everyone grabbed their high cap .45s or Glocks. There were about 35 competing. Two used Glock 17s with the 33 round magazines to make it "easy."

SOMETHING I ALWAYS WANTED TO DO . . . kick a bunch of competitor's butts with my fast shooting chopped M25-2 with moonclips. Heck, I do my best shooting with this incredible gun and I can reload it as fast as my 1911. So . . . I'm thinking . . .

"Hmmm . . . if I DON'T miss, I'll have to load, then reload twice more, and shoot really fast to beat these guys. It's an uphill challenge . . . but I'd LOVE to see 'em all cry.

You should have seen 'em rib me when I came to the line with the 25-2 with a few moonclips on my belt. I just told 'em . . . "I sure wouldn't want to get my butt kicked by a middle-aged guy with a 6-shot WHEELGUN!

Long story short . . . I won by over 2 seconds. I shot double action and just as my front sight came down out of recoil on the next sight the cylinder rolled to the end of the stroke and the gun kicked again. I DIDN'T MISS and made two blazing and perfect reloads.

You should have seen those boys sprayin' and prayin' . . . and the more they got frustrated, the worse they shot!

Ahh . . . the memories!

Default Another sneaky thing i wanted to pull off . . .

My company used to have an annual deer hunting trip to Mississippi each winter for mgt. staff that liked to hunt.

Some of the executives didn't hunt much though but they enjoyed going. The first afternoon they'd go out to this 300 yard deep field near the camphouse and sight in their rifles (some borrowed) at about 50 yards.

Since I knew this happened each year, I decided to trip 'em all out. So, I studied the ballistic coefficients of my 300 grain Federal Castcore ammo in my 6" Holosight-topped Model 29-5 revolver I hunt with.

I determined that the bullet would drop 34" at 200 yards . . . and went to the range back home several times to confirm it. I learned how high to aim above a milk jug at 200 yards to "sail" it into the air. Since my revolver always benches 3" groups under 2" with the Holosight at 50 yards, this equals ,8" at 200 . . .

Thus, a 34" hold and perfect technique DID sail the milk jugs. I was ready.

AT SIGHT IN TIME . . .

They headed out to put out their targets, drawn on cardboard boxes. I headed out with a milk jug, with my .44 in its belt holster. I CAREFULLY paced off 200 yards and sat down the jug and returned.

Since they had to wait for me to wait the 400 yard round trip, all eyes were on me. One of the Vice Presidents bit . . .

"Tom, do you REALLY think you can hit that milk jug with a rifle that far away" "Sure," I replied.

"Where's your rifle," he continued. "No, I'm going to use this revolver!"

HE CONTINUED . . .

"Do you really think you can hit that with a handgun?"

I replied, "Sure, the bullet is going to go where it is going to go, so if I do MY part I should hit it."

Now I already had a reputation around the company as a handgun competitor and I had lots of plaques and trophies in my office they'd casually noticed.

So . . . I was ready to do my "trick." All eyes were on me as I went prone . . . carefully making sure my breathing and technique were perfect.

BAM!

The milk jug went flying . . . I calmly blew the smoke off the end of the barrel, holstered the revolver and went back in the club house, as their jaws remained dropped.

It was priceless! I never told 'em how I'd researched and verified that shot before hand!!!

T.

Smile Beat The National Champion

When I was coming up in Bullseye in the late 80s and early 90s, and close to Quantico, there were numerous role models to emulate. One of the most respected was, and is, Rick Rodriguez. I shot next to him early on at an indoor match at Quantico (when they still had them) and still keep a 100-6X target that he scored and signed. Anyway, I chased him but I couldn't catch him. Until one Sunday at a match in Ashland, Virginia. It was down to the end of the .22 match, and I had just shot a 200-14x. Rick and I were tied, but since I had beat him clean on the previous target, the match was awarded to me. So for one brief shining moment. I can tell you that having the Marines to compete against -- Latoya, Zins, Reed, and company in those days -- gave many serious civilian shooters the opportunity to learn and grow. Now that I'm deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the opportunities for regular bullseye shooting aren't there, but the whitetail hunting sure is. Every time I get a whitetail in the iron sights of my long tube Model 57, I remember Gunny Curtis in my ear reminding me, "Front sight!" It ain't about the score, guys.

I have enjoyed hunting and fishing all my life. I have always thought it would be fun to get in a couple days varmint hunting in the prairie dog towns in one of our western states. Aside from helping some rancher eradicate these destructive pests, the challenge of the constant wind, the oppurtunity for long range shots and high numbers of targets appeals to me. I may take the time to fulfill this desire in the future.

The Air Force gave me the chance to do what I've always wanted to with a gun when they made me an AC-130 gunner and sent me off to do my job.

Now... I'd love to get behind the trigger on an A-10!

How about a day of shooting with Ed McGivern and Elmer Keith. A late 19th century safari in Central Africa. A day at the range with lots of Class 3 hardware.

Ok, I don't know how it could be done LEGALLY but, I've always wanted to go through a ( EMPTY OF PEOPLE ) grocery store with a Thompson, pushing a buggy filled with loaded 100 round drums. Just imagine, walking down the aisles blasting jars of jelly, peanut butter, cereal, flour, rice, and can goods galore! The fruit and vegetable section would be fun too! Total destruction! I know, I know! A waste of food, there are pygmies starving in Ethiopia, etc. But we're taking fantasy here.

Default Great gun memories and a fantasy

Watch my 12 yr old son, Joe, get down on one knee and calmy shoot his first deer.

See my wife knock her first pheasant out of the air.

Watch Joe, still 12, practice running the bolt on his Kimber .22 while attempting to shoot expert at an appleseed shoot.

Headshoot a flying chukar with my .22 Colt Frontier scout, as a kid.

While showing off the accuracy of my Freedom Arms .454, actually hit a gallon can at a measured 1/4 mile!
I was just hoping to land a couple close by, my buddy had made a poor showing with his .300 Weatherby. I told him I could shoot that good with my pistol. The only hole in the can was .45.

Track and kill a huge brown bear that had been wounded by one of my clients. I was on his trail in thick alders for over 3 hours. I was packing my alltime favorite back up rifle, a Winchester Model 71 Deluxe in .450 Alaskan. When I did catch up to him it took 3 400 gr slugs in his shoulder to drop him.
His hide squared an honest 11' and the skull easily made B&C.

BOOMERSHOOT!
Explosive, minute of angle sized targets, out to 700 yds. 100 positions on the firing line, everthing from .223 to 50BMG going off at once in a free for all. 1000 targets took all day. MOA sized targets at 500+ yards are hard to hit, but a 5" cube of tannerite makes on heck of a crater!
That was a blast.

But what I would really like to do is wear my sixshooter into the house of representatives in Washinton D.C. alongside a group of Patriots and tell the *******s to listen up, they work for US.
