Organ Donor?
I am. I really don't know who would want my old worn-out organs but I figure if somebody needs something while I'm toast, welcome.
Really a sidebar to my first VA experience in 38 years. Short story is I'm uninsured after two layoffs. I need medical assistance. This old Viet Vet goes to the VA.
Spent five and one half hours at the local VA Hospital (Wilkes-Barre) yesterday and despite long waiting times I was pleasently surprised. I expected Dr. Patel, and I got him. I did not expect the proficient and professional staff who precedeed him. They were nice. I was moved as I sat and waited with my brothers-in-arms from all fields and years of conflict.
If anybody needs an organ please don't ask for mine. I'm still using them.

Mike -
That IS what they call it: "harvesting". I was present when they were harvesting the eye balls of a girl who got killed in an auto accident. It totally freaked me out.
I'm an organ donor, but the only thing they would probably be interested in will almost certainly wind up in the Smithsonian next to John Dillinger's. The liver is still pretty good, but I'm working on that as I type. . .

Yes, I'm an organ donor. My father was the recipient of a heart transplant so I probably feel a little more passionate about this than most.

Absolutely! I have had 3 organ transplants since 1998 and aside from taking a handful of pills in the morning and evening, lead a normal, very active life. All of you guys that are living donors- and those that have passed on as well- deserve recognition. My personal thanks and respect goes out to you!

Once I'm gone, they can part me out like a Buffalo after an Indian kill.

[I wish I was, or am trying to become] A greedy, mean hermit with a bad attitude that don't like people anyway.
I'm an equal opportunity codger...I dislike all people equally proportionate.
I'm with Aussie.
I don't want anyone else's loud organs either.
After all, they might be out of tune.
If they have a saxophone, I'll take it.

I have not as yet agreed to be a donor - I don't know if I have anything in me which may be considered usable, but who knows - my eyes are about shot, I'm not sure about the rest of my inners.

Well, I have some for a Model A, a 1973 LTD, and a few S&W parts in the classifieds, and locomotive bell- any of these work?
I know a buddy in the steam boiler business, but all his parts are hot! *He he he*

I have signed up to be an organ donor. I am also an organ recipient. I have received one kidney and a pancreas back in '96 and then, when that pancreas stopped working, I received another pancreas in 2007. I am happy and grateful to the people (and their relatives) who were generous enough to think of others.

No. It's a money maker for everyone buy the schmuck who donates his for free. Doctors and everyone else gets paid. Donors and their families get nothing.

As a capitalist, I agree 100% with Gator. People in the medical field will cite ethics as a reason for not paying dodnors. Well, them ain't my ethics! I belive in getting paid.
Side note; the Florida Eye Bank takes every cornea they can harvest, donor or not.

I don't understand your concern about doctors getting paid. Do you think doctors should work for free? Do you work for free? And who is "everyone else?"

The same can be said about donating blood, but it is something that I choose to do with the hope that it helps somebody else, and I could care less about who makes a buck! Yeah, the donor and their families get nothing, but the person needing the blood and his family get a heck of a lot.

Perhaps he finds issue with the same thing I do (besides just not wanting to donate anything)...
The recipient is charged for the organ donated- something freely given. I could see them charging for the services of transportation and services in obtaining the organ, but not for the organ itself.

As long as I am truly done with them, they can have anything of use. It'll make the load lighter for the pawlbearers.

"When I'm dead just cut me up and pass me all around,
give my knees to the needy, etc..."
- from an old John Prine song
When my mother passed someone regained their sense of sight because she was an organ donor and they harvested the cornias from her eyes. In my times of sadness when I think of my Mom, I know that someone is better off because of her donation.

You used to be able to sell your blood, but the redcross didn't like the competition for their free supply of blood (that they charge big bucks for). The redcross had the practice made illegal.
