Help with WWII Veteran Data Base
Recently i posted this thread in the "Other Brands" forum regarding my Nazi era Walther P38.
http://smith-wessonforum.com/firearm...ally-shot.html
It is a "bring back" gun with the release certificate. Luckily the owner wrote his name and address on the back of the certificate. I'm trying to find out more about this man so that I can add it to this gun's history. His name is Michael T. DePace from Queens in NYC. So here's my question. Do any of you know of a data base that I can access? The ones I have found all want me to sign up and pay fees. I'd love to know where he served and perhaps when he was discharged. And maybe he's still alive and well and I can get in touch with him. Anyway, thanks for any help that you can provide. I'll re-post the pics of the certificate here.

Try the New York State Military Museum. I don't hae an address but google them and see what happens; They have a pretty good data base.

I have been recently trying to fill in some blanks on my Pops' WWII records. The POW camp he was in, area of Belgium he got his Purple Heart wounds, and so forth.
I had some success just typing in W W II veterans on the google search.
As you say,of the multiple sites that pop up, most are "pay", but the one that indicates gov.org got me some rudimentary info.
Sorry I can not help you further, however, google, (again) maps, still shows the address on the back of that slip of paper.
I see you are just about as far from Long Island as you can get in the U S, but, this is a far reaching forum, and while NYC does not like guns, NY guys do. Maybe one will chime in on who you might reach out to.
You will tread lightly on privacy issues, right ? In spite of your interest, which I understand and appreciate, some people like the past to stay in the past.

Thanks guys for your help. I am very grateful and really appreciate your suggestions. I think the direction hoc9sw sent me is perfect. It gives me the confirmation that I wanted and I have no further plans to find information that is not in the public domain. I even thought twice about posting the pic of the back of the certificate. But maybe someone will have interest and contact me. Anyway, I'm more than satisfied with this additional info and it will be carefully preserved with the P38.
A few days ago I did a Google Map search of the house and address in Queens and by going to street view you can actually see the house as it is today. The neighborhood looks very much like the opening credits of the old All in the Family Show where Archie Bunker lived. Public School 122 is still there and probably looks today just like it did back in '45. It appears well kept and well preserved.

Astoria Queens
A lot has changed since 1945. Astoria is considered a nice neighborhood and is heavily Greek.

You might try looking for a historical society for the area. They tend to have folks who know about local resources that are not on line. In my home county, we have a book of notes on every local veteran we know about. But you have to dig through the paper.

6 ft, 9 in, 92 pounds!
Are you guys trying to turn me into a genealogist? LOL!
Thanks again guys. The last website hoc9sw provided clarified the earlier table in one way but muddied it in another. The uswarchives site listed Italy or San Marino and I assumed (incorrectly) this was his assignment in WWII. However, the NARA table listed Italy or San Marino as his "nativity" which means place of birth. San Marino is east of Florence and is completely surrounded by Italy. It appears that listing Italy or San Marino was the standard way of listing place of birth. I looked up the DePace name and learned that it is Italian in origin. I had assumed (again incorrectly) that it was probably Dutch.
On the other hand the NARA table listed his height as 83 inches and his weight at 92 pounds. Somehow I don't believe that Mr. DePace was 6 feet 9 inches tall and only 92 pounds.
Anyway, I hope that Michael DePace was assigned to Italy and had a chance to see some of his native country of birth. I think chances are good that this happened as the war trophy certificate is from the Mediterranean Theatre.

De Pace
My father's name was Michael De Pace. He did serve in the Army
from 1943-1945 an did live in Astoria Queens. However he passed in 1997. Going to have to assume he is one and the same.
Would appreciate any info about his time in the service.
My e-mail address is [email protected]

Talk about a near coincidence, my Walther, a Nov 41 Byf made Walther, serial nr is 1048, was stolen on Jan 6th 2000.

Possibly after reading td1949 posts he is giving actual information based upon knowing the person rather than what is obviously inaccurate information from old records?
Would not be the first time for a typo, you know 6 instead of a 5.
BTW td1949 welcome to the forum, and thanks for your input!

That link is to transcribed data. I don't have free access to the WWII draft registration cards from microfilm, but that would be a good source of original information. Transcriptions are notorious for poor handwriting interpretation or just typos.
