We do not know what caused the post counts to crash.

It was apparently some type of glitch when a repair was run on a totally different area of the software. There are repair programs built into the software for specific problems. We had a problem with a member's signature area. When we ran a repair program for that, it reset post counts to state the number of posts you have that actually STILL EXIST on the board.
It should not have reset them. Actual existing post count is an option in the software. We have NOT used it, and it is an option we have stayed well away from.
If you recall, we had to move the forum data a SECOND time in June to restore post counts for the members.
We did not reset them here.

The reason many posts don't exist any more is because of pruning. Old threads were pruned from certain non data areas like The Lounge back when we were on Groupee because bandwidth and storage costs became so high. If we exceeded 250,000 posts, the cost went up dramatically.
As the real data had grown over the years, it became necessary to trim the real stuff like gun, reloading, and ammo threads also. Trimming The Lounge, the ads, The Wish List, and New Member Intros simply would not keep us below that super expensive threshold of 250,000 posts.

We moved within DAYS of it finally being possible to move. Had I known we would finally be able to move in June, I might have toughed it out and paid the bill, but I could not forsee the move date till the end of May, and the debt was rapidly growing month by month to a substantial level.

Those who post mainly in the non-data areas were hit the hardest, since those areas were always pruned the heaviest. If you are new, you probably lost little or none because we haven't pruned in months.

I am sorry it happened, but don't see it as a really big deal.
And, before the rumors or "implications" start, like I said, it was entirely an unintended consequence of another problem.
I won't have any trouble telling you when I delete something on purpose- check the record.


AGAIN- NO Posts, NO threads, and NO material were deleted in this latest episode.

If we prune in the future, it will ONLY be non-critical areas, NOT data areas.

I ain't fixin' nuthin'.
We could use a backup from Thursday nite, but we lose all data from that backup on, like all your brilliant, salient posts.

We would also lose most of the SWCA section, all the members I have enabled for the SWCA since then (over 100), and all the Expert Commentary posted since then.
Ain't happenin'!

My theory is the "software" deleted all the post that had no "content." Proof of this is in rburgs post count. He's now a lowly little guy like the rest of us.

Lee, thanks for all the work! Myself, I would be just fine if there were no post count. I know who I am going to read, be it for knowledge, opinion, humor, whatever. I also know who I ignore. A person's post count has nothing to do with this so why even have it?

A few years ago, on the SiGforum, this was known as being "circlesq-ed", at first it only happened to a particular forum member whose username was 'circlesq', then it happened to a few random members, then it happened to a large number of us. Happened to me twice, I think. It hasn't happened again for a long time, now that the forum software has been upgraded a couple of times since. *shrug* Post counts mean more to some than others, I guess.

Lost most of my post count and senior member status. I believe that does matter. Kinda makes me feel less valid as a human being. Boo Hoo! I better stay away from tall buildings and bridges for awhile, until the depression subsides. But seriously.....who cares about how much you've said, compared with what you've said? It's about substance, not quantity.

I think those of us who have been affected should receive this new "special" designation of member status. ESMHHC, I have included it in my signature. LOL!

Post Count loss is not a problem! 4000+ in 6.5 years was embarrassing anyways. Now my 200+ gives me the perception of being much more practical and less of a "too much info" kinda person.

It's a bit rough lately. The baby is sick and needs medicine, the wife needs to see the dentist, and the truck broke down, so I have trouble getting to work. It has also been real muddy on the job, so my work boots fell apart.
