Thank you for that information, I assumed you must use the form. I think I still have a form somewhere that I printed out years ago, if I cant find it, I will take your advise and just send the info and check without the form.

I would think the serial # of the gun would be in the report, but I dont know if that was standard practice in the 1930s

I think he may have a value in mind that is unrealistic, and if he does I will just walk away, and tell him its more than I can afford rather than try to talk him in to a lower price.

I have known this man for 20 years and I met his uncle a couple of times before he died. This gun was only used in the shootout and to my knowlege did not cause injury to any of Dillinger's gang. So the premium would be much less than if it killed one of his gang

I have not yet seen the gun, he lives 150 miles from me and he does not have internet. All I am looking for is what this would add to the value, the gun is easy to look up once I have the model, serial # and condition.

I plan on it, I know he has a letter from his uncle stating that he used it in the shootout, and I should be able to get a copy of the police report he filed and I imagine that report should have record of the gun he used.

grip I took the right grip off and found that the # there is 317xx on the butt the one looks almost exactly like the seven next to it. I plan on getting a factory letter for it, and I am pleased that you prompted me to look at the grip # as I would have sent them the wrong serial # and wasted...

I checked the serial # again and it is correct and it is on the bottom of the butt. the top rib reads "smith & wesson springfield mass. u.s.a. pat. july 10. x0. jan. 27. feb. 17. july 11. 65 & aug. 24. xx" the "x" means I could not read the # There are no other #s visible.

I have a model 3 serial #377xx in 44 Henry, can anyone tell me when it was made. Also it has initials carved into the inside of the grip, is this something done by the owner or someone at the factory. Any other info would also be appreciated. Thanks.
