Looking for date of manufacture SW 500

The serial number is the DMF number, it is shown in the frame window as you indicated and on the bottom of the grip frame. The other number is meaningless after it leaves the assembly line. If you call S&W on their 800 number they can tell you the year of the gun by its serial number.

More on the FAA and flight safety

That's the FAA, for sure. In 1o82-83 I worked for the FAA as an ATCS (controller) at Edwards RAPCON (an FAA facility, not Air Force, although we primarily handled military traffic). We covered a huge area, and had numerous radars linked through a computer system, with only one remaining ARTS III...

    586 or Python?

I've owned quite a few Pythons and L frame Smith's over the years, all are great guns. Yes, one of my Pythons did start to go out of time. It is a 2 1/2" Nickel gun which was carried as a duty gun from its birth in 1965, and had been primarily used with factory 357 ammo, usually around 2,000 to...

M39-2 Failure To Eject (UPDATE, GOOD NEWS)

About 15 years ago, I bought a nickel 39-2, cleaned/lubricated it, then went shooting. New factory 124 grain ammo. Numerous FTF and FTE, a real han-o-matic. I checked the extractor, no damage. Installed a new Woolf extra power extractor spring and a new standard weight recoil spring. Problem...

    Best cleaner for nickel finish

Flitz, Simichrome and Mothers Mag Polish are all good for cleaning up hazy or tarnished nickel finishes. The key is to do it by hand with almost no pressure, and frequently turn the towel to keep it clean. I have had great results with Mothers Mag Polish, it is not quite as aggressive as Flitz...

29-2 plus an 18-2, And some fun with Grips

Just a quick note. The 29-2 I sold to John (pictured in the first post) has a 6 1/2 inch barrel. I know, seems nit-picky, but I have always felt that the 6 1/2" barrel on an N frame is just more aesthetically pleasing than a 6" barrel.

    2.75" M69

I bought a 2.75" 69 about a year ago. I am a lifelong 44 nut, and have long had a number of 29s, 629s and Rugers in that caliber, including a 329PD (that one does recoil a bit). Frankly, when the 69 first came out, I saw no purpose in it. Sure, it was a bit lighter than my 4" 629, but not that...
