    617 8 3/8"

I stand corrected. However still prefer the first no dash.

    29-3 w/ 8 3/8 barrel

If I have the original box I prefer to wipe it down and store it in the S&W wax paper in the factory box. Guns not in factory box goes in a gun rug. They all work. My 29 - 3 is a bit unusual. It is stainless with factory combat grips, scope rings, wood presentation case with tools and papers...

What's a fair price for local sale for this 29?

Model 29 means nothing. What is the dash number?

686-7 MG…Couldn’t take the Bear Hugs anymore

I have the new 629 Mountain Gun and the grips are fat enough, remember it is a larger frame. However, I have at least XXL hands and my pinkly is hanging off and my knuckle is against the trigger guard. Love the old N frame target and combat stocks. They are the only ones that fit me.

    617 8 3/8"

You didn't say if it is a no dash with recessed chambers. That makes a difference. Does it have a - number? I have a 6" Lew Horton edition with combat grips, never fired no turn line combat grips, box, papers, tools, no dash I paid $1250.00 a couple years ago. The 8 3/8 barrel is worth less...

    S&W 617 Mountain Gun

Thanks gdpolk. So it is a nice gun with nice features, but not intended for protection like every other Mountain Gun before it. Still makes a nice target shooter.

I'm not a speed loader guy, but have plenty of them and HKS offers them and they work great for my 41 mags.

    S&W 617 Mountain Gun

What makes a Mountain Gun a Mountain Gun? I always thought it was a defensive gun for large animals that want to kill you that you carry for protection. What am I missing? Don't get me wrong, I actually want one.

Pre Model 21 Or Pre Model 24 Help???

Yes they updated the listing from pre 21 to pre 24. I don't blame them though. S&W old guns can get very complicated. It happens.

    9 row knurled SAT

For what it's worth one of mine that's close serial # 171927 shipped April 1957. To be honest I'm not sure the 8 row or 9 row came with what fire arm, but since either is possible I'm not worried about it.

    9 row knurled SAT

I have two premodel 29's. I asked the same question on here and was told either one was possible regardless if it was a 1956 or 1957. I have both.

Pre Model 21 Or Pre Model 24 Help???

What do you mean? They are listed in the Smith Catalogue as pre model 21 and 24 just like all my other pre models.

Pre Model 21 Or Pre Model 24 Help???

I own a pre model 24 6.5" Model of 1950. 44 special. They have the ramped front sight and rear adjustable rear sight. I found a Pre model 21 model of 1950 for sale and it does not have the front blade and gutter military sights. That is what makes it a Military pre model 21, but the add says pre...

    27-2 8 3/8" Opinions

People poo poo the 8 3/8 barrel. I don't know why but I have acquired more of them than any other. If you want it for hunting get the 41 mag or the 44 mag. I have the 357 as well, but the more power the better.
