    Lapping Compound

I used 320, 600 and 800 but only because I had them. The 600 finish is probably sufficient, you need to go slow and check often. 5 micron is around 2800 grit, no real point going for a mirror finish since it will be etched by hot gases the first time you fire it. It's a shame Brownells don't...

    686 SSR Forcing Cone Issue

Bluedot37, you jogged my memory, there was one more thing I wanted to mention. I noticed when sliding the brass pilot in from the muzzle I found there was a definite constriction at the barrel threads, which sounds like where yours was still leading. I guess I'll have to cross that bridge when I...

    686 SSR Forcing Cone Issue

Thanks scooter123 here's hoping that's the way it plays out. I'm using hard cast and they are not driven terribly hard so hoping all will be good. Full loads and jacketed ammo are not allowed where I shoot. Certainly has been good learning experience. NickB, No I didn't buy the gauge but in my...

    686 SSR Forcing Cone Issue

Thank you all for the advice and comments. Well it has taken me most of the day but for better or worse this is my repair. As you can see some of the deeper gouges of the original S&W forcing cone close to the rifling are still there. It really looks like it was cut with no pilot and the cutter...

    686 SSR Forcing Cone Issue

I traded an old 686-6 on a brand new 686SSR just over a year ago and was initially very happy with my purchase. Perfect carry up on all six, well finished, reasonable trigger, just an all-round nice looking revolver. Unfortunately that’s where the frustration started, I just can’t get this thing...

When Polishing the Rebound Spring, Hammer Stud and Yoke Barrel Bosses is the aim to have a mirror finish on these parts? Is tha a video or someone that could share their technique for polishing these particular parts?

M&P R8 interchangeable front sight help

Resurrecting this thread as I picked up a new 686 SSR today and encountered a similar problem while trying replace the ramp sight with a Patridge foresight. In my case I had to remove the retaining pin in order to get the front sight out. I had to use some oil and a thin punch inserted from the...

    L Frame hand question.

Can the hand from a 686-6 with MIM trigger be reused if a forged trigger is fitted or is the hand design different between the MIM and forged triggers? I know the hand spring and trigger lever are different between MIM and forgerd so would need to be replaced.

    Identifying Wolff Springs

Thanks Chief, all makes good sense. I was able to identify the springs by scaling from this photo I found on the web. Sorry the original question was a little light on information. One more question you may be able to help me with. Can the hand from a 686-6 with MIM trigger be reused if a...

    Identifying Wolff Springs

Ive been given a bag of Wolff springs that is supposed to contain standard and reduced power main springs and 13, 14 and 15 pound reduced power rebound springs. Am I correct in guessing the longer main spring is standard power one and the longest rebound is 13#, middle size is 15# and shortest...
