Be careful, I have a Bulldog 36 inch case that only holds a 33 inch gun... go figure. 33 inches is long enough with the stock collapsed. A true 36 would fit with the stock open very nicely.

Car parts stores sell brass shim stock in varying thicknesses. Cheap, easy, requires no machining and won't mar the barrel. I'd still prefer one that didn't need shimming tho.
