I have just over 10500 rounds through my M&P 9. I am a retired wildlife officer (HR 218) and an IDPA shooter.
Never had a fail load or extract however recently I discovered I had a crack in my slide. I sent it into Smith and Wesson on Friday and had it back with new slide the following Friday...
I also found my slide had cracked after an IDPA match. In fact the crack was in the exact location as the above pictures indicate. Sent my M&P 9 to S&W and got it back in less than a week with a new slide.
Nothing like good customer service.

Yes it is in almost the exact same place but my crack is about twice as long and runs up further. Like you said it is in a place of little or no stress. That is what has our safety officers freaking out. If it cracked there then why not in a critical stress point.
