Don't buy into all the negativity about this beast of a gun. I have the 6.5 with built in ports and I love this hand cannon! I use a glove on my right hand and put a tight grip on her and it's no problem at all. I'm only 5'10" 180. Being a fellow CA guy I know your pain about all our insane...
I have the 6.5 with built in ports. It's been mostly a novelty handgun for me. Take it camping and for head turning at the range. Hard to find ammo for it lately.
I have the same model as you shortstuf and was wondering the same thing. I have been wanting to try some Buffalo Bore but wasn't sure if it clog up the ports. I also love this hand cannon! Not as bad as some people make it out to be, the recoil. I use padded gloves and it works out ok.
Don't know if anyone has seen this video of Jerry Miculek rapid firing a 4" S&W 500, it's pretty awesome!
?That?s all the fun I want right there.? Jerry Miculek rapid-fires the .500 S&W Magnum
Congrats on your new hand cannon! I have a 6.5 and love it! Took a little bit to get used it. Lock your wrists and squeeze her like you mean it! I wear gloves with some padding in the palm, if you're right handed, that's where you'll feel most. I shoot about 10-15 rds. and rest for a while.
I have the S&W 500 6.5, as you know, the 6.5 has a fixed compensator not removable like the other models. My question is, can I shoot lead cast rounds like Buffalo Bore's ammo without fouling the holes? Is there something special to clean them if they do get fouled like a small diameter brass...
Try Parabellum Research. "cheapest" place I've found. They have some in stock, usually around $40 for a box of 25, with shipping, around $60. Been saving my brass for my 500, hopefully to start reloading one of these days.

To the OP, what type of holster are you planning on using during your camping trip?
I just bought a cheap one I found on E-Bay. It's a cammo nylon bandoleer type. It fits the gun pretty good. Not heavy at all. Paid $35 for it. Maybe down the road I'll...
Finally got a chance to take my new 500 6.5 to the range. What a blast, literally! I only shot 10 rounds cause I want to save the rest of the ammo for an upcoming camping trip. I was using Parabellum Research 400gr. Grouping wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was at an outdoor range and...
