Former173rd, this CAN BE a huge collector gun, but it all depends on condition. In the condition you show $450 or so seems a fair price. I have a similar gun in much better condition that I think might bring more money.

The 640 is significantly heavier than the 642. I carry mine in a Mika pocket holster and find it rides great all day with little trouble.

That sounds like something I'd like to play with. I love the 1917, and in good condition, can come close to the asking price of the pistol you saw. If the second cylinder was good quality, and the whole package was of high quality, I think I might have bought that gun. I like unique pieces.

I bought this one, ser # 82xx, about 4 years ago for $400. I thought it was high then. I wouldn't let it go for less than $550 myself, if at all.

Dave, I have a 1917, Ser # 1641 that I was told shipped in October, 1917. This was from an on line data base. It must have been in the very earliest production run.
