Well pretty much it depends on the size of the intruder, if he is a heavyweight or a lightweight, fat, built or skinny. How deeply layered is their clothes. If all fails just shoot for the eyes. You cannot go wrong there. Also if you only have a .22lr rifle or pistol than get you a baton also...
