WTB: Model 29-2 blue from late 60s/early 70s

Basically, I'm looking for nice M29 that is about as old as I am :) And while I fully intend to shoot it, I also intend to take very good care of it. So 98%+ finish and correct/tight function are important to me. Tools/case/papers etc are not Barrel length is also secondary, but would prefer...

    M1917... what have I got?

Thank you Thank you everyone who helped me identify the likley history of this revolver. I don't think it's worth getting a letter for this gun and I will most likely just enjoy shooting it. :)

    M1917... what have I got?

I'm not convinced that this is correct--I've now looked at enough legit "mint" M1917s to see that area is (at least sometimes) blued...For example, this gun. Both of these are good observations and I have confirmed. Yes, I now am convinced that this is a reblue. Thank you for this.

    M1917... what have I got?

Would this be something a Smith and Wesson letter would report? Trying to decide if the gun is worth the $$$ for a letter.

    M1917... what have I got?

What is the tell tale sigh of a reblue?

    M1917... what have I got?

Interesting. Right now don't think think this is a reblue, at least not unless the case hardening has been redo as well. The pics don't show it perfectly but the case colors on the hammer and trigger are still pretty good too. Just a general dimming with the only noticable wear on the hammer spur

    M1917... what have I got?

Thanks for this info. So if these are not original/stocks, when/where might they date from? FWIW, I just took the stocks off and they have a darkened area on the inside that matches the curves/contours of the internal profile of the grip frame perfectly. Seems like they have either been on...

    M1917... what have I got?

Thanks for the link. The serial number (323xx) does indeed date this to 1918. Is this the kind of gun it would be worth getting a letter from S&W for?...

    M1917... what have I got?

Just inherited what seems to be a S&W M1917 military issue revolver in 45ACP. Serial number (I think) dates it to 1918 but what's got me confused is the finish and stocks--they don't look like other M1917s that I see on the website. The finish is a gorgeous deep blue ( not parkarized) and the...

    Price check 22-4

i would say that's an "ok"price--not a smokin' deal but then again, the 22-4 was a limited run . if you want a 22-4 then go for it.

Looking to purchase an S&W 45 ACP revolver

If you can find a 22-4, it is an ideal defensive 45acp revolver. The tapered barrel and fixed sight make a very compact and rugged package.

    S&W 625-JM Catastrophic Failure/Accident

since when have old timers known about ANYthing on the internets? :D

    S&W 625-JM Catastrophic Failure/Accident

there's a difference between "detonation" and "burning". burning is a controlled chemical reaction and is why we try to match the burn rate of a powder to a particular cartridge. powder burn rate increases with confinement and pressure, but it always burns. a detonation happens nearly...

    S&W 625-JM Catastrophic Failure/Accident

this is one of those old wives tales that makes it around every once and a while, but that never comes with any scientific evidence. fact is no reloading manual that i have ever seen (or heard of) makes mention of it (and if anybody had a strong interest in describing this phenomina, it would...
