I'm ready to purchase another revolver and I am looking at 8-shot models for Open Steel Challenge competition. I currently shoot a 986 but would like that extra round. I'd like to hear some opinions about what you shoot and why. Thanks :)
If only S&W would make a 986 in an 8 shot my decisions would be dramatically easier for another steel competition revolver. I wonder if you could get a custom cylinder made?
I don't have any 9x21 brass to try in my 986 but even with light loads and light bullet heads it runs like a dream for steel shooting. I'm not a bullseye shooter so I just need to hit a plate.
To echo H Richard, I noticed today when I used the speed loaders I had to run my finger around the rounds to make sure all were seated properly.
I will be running Federal #710 Game-Shok tomorrow because I have just enough of it for the match.
Thanks for the quick answer. I have about 4900 rounds of mini-mags so I will have to start looking into local shops and shooters to do a little trading with. My big problem is that I have 36gr HP rounds and I can't cross into NJ to shoot with them so RN rounds will be on the hunt.
I usually run high velocity ammunition in semi-auto rimfire pistols but since I recently switched to a 617 4" for steel competitions I was wondering if standard velocity CCI's would serve me better the the high velocity mini-mags? Are the SV dirtier because of the non coated heads? Can you run...
Does anyone know if you can find the mainspring strain screw at a local hardware or Fastenal store? I don't want to mess up the original but want to start to work on finding the perfect/consistent firing light trigger pull. I have a Wolff hammer spring and 11# trigger return spring installed...
If it's the lube it's not an issue. I will shoot out the lead that I have and move on to jacketed 124gr RN in the future. No problem then. Thanks for all the info gentleman!
